A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 19, 2003 Protesters fail to crash premier’s private party By SARAH A. ZIMMERMAN ABOUT 45 poster-wielding protesters were turned away from a private recep- lion with Gordon Campbell last week while the pre- mier was here promoting the 2010 Olympic bid. The group — mostly angry [WA members — tried to gain entry to the $10 per person reception but were turned away by Lael McKeown, president of the local Liberal consti- tuency association. “We were hoping that he would come out here,” said John Demedeiros, From front plant chairman for local 2171 of the WA. “Log exports are ex- porting our jobs out of this province.” The group kept to the sidewalk outside the Coast Inn of the West, where the reception was being held, for most of the rally until protesters decided tc try. to get inside. Protesters were told the event was a private recep- tion and they were invited to contact Liberal MLA Roger Harris with any con-— cerns. “He is. my premier, I'm a citizen of B.C.,” former Northwest Community College instructor John Hart. “I just want five min- utes — I just have a few questions.” Protesters chanted “we want jobs — not taxes,” re- ferring to the recent 3.5 cents per litre gas tax an- nounced by the premier last week. Police arrived to the ‘rally asking protesters to move back to the sidewalk - the parking lot is private property. The protesters moved without incident and were gone within an hour of the rally’s start. Gov't promises rural aid Harris alse predicted the province will help make the proposed Ste- wart-Omineca resource road a reality. Daily ferry sailings be- tween Prince Rupert and Port Hardy. were. also pledged, although there were no details as to how that would happen with the current B.C. Ferries fleet. A northwest investment fund that would use tax credits to encourage in- vestment that could be tapped by northwest com- panies wasn’t part of the throne speech. But Harris said he’s hopeful: the government will. work on that’ plan through the year. Improved relationships with First Nations and continued work towards treaties and related mea- sures were also promised, — The throne speech also delivered an apology for past treatment of aborigi- tial people. “Errors have been made in the past,” the speech said. “Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province. Your government deeply regrets the mistakes that were made by governments of every political stripe over the course of our pro- vince’s history.” It went on to promise major action this year to conclude treaties and other measures to help aborigi- nal people, Inland ferry tolls dropped USK FERRY users will nol have to pay an $18 per month toll to bring vehi- cles across the Skeena River after all. The announcement came as Premier Gordon Campbell made his state of the province address Feb. 12. “L say praise the Lord,” says resident Solveig Thornton. “That's really good news for us.” Last July the ministry of transportation said the in- land ferry would begin ap- plying a frequent user toll of $18 per month. That toll was supposed. to begin last month. “I’m happy, you've got that for sure,” Thornton says. She adds the province’s 2003 4Runner with available V8. power ; The weed new 4Runner is bigger, roomier, and : more powerful than ever, with your choice of ¥6 reversal on the decision is especially good news for people who use larger in- land ferries, such as the one at Francois Lake. “For Usk here, we're such: a small little thing, but for some of the big fer- ries that’s a big deal,” she says, “We're into free ser- vice here — that is very } welcome.” CRIMEA STOPPERS 635-TIP - “MODELS MODELS, MODEL are required far dhe Soring Fusion Shterational Pear Show Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003 The Coast Inn of the West #4620 Lakelse Ave., Terrace For model inquiries or tickets for the hair show (Licansed Cosmetologist anly plaase) | PLEASE CALL 1-866-764-8925 now accepting registrations for * 2003-2004 school year ~~ Kindergarten - Grade 12 Offering you and your family — quality Christian Education Contact Information/Inquiries - 3608 Sparks St., Terrace, B.C.
