Well-wishers celebrate local resident’s birthday AFTER A year of plan- ning, the family of Olwen Mary Billson held a sur- prise 80th birthday cele- bration for their mother. _ The celebration was held on IJnly 16, 2000 at the Elks Hall on Tetrault St in Terrace and what a happy, joyous occasion it Was Yes, it certainly was a very happy occasion for Mrs. Billson on her special birthday. The wonderful event started at 4 pm, when all the special guests Started to arrive. They were kindly. greeted at the door by Mrs, Billson and her two great grand-daugh- ters, Ashley and Randy. Then on to an open fellow- ship time. ‘Master of Ceremonies was son, Victor Billson coming from Orleans On- tario. Around 5:45 pm, it was ‘Welcome’ and table set- ting ‘time accompanied by a vocal performance by the Rusty Angels - con- sisting of Dorothy Smith, Norma Stephens and Melia and Ann Houghton. They sang, Hear the voices of my beloved. At 6 pm, Reverend Houghton said grace then everyone enjoyed a lovely cold buffet dinner with a delicious dessert table along with tea and coffee. After dinner a beautiful mament was when Mrs. Billson’s daughter Dorothy sang, Wind beneath mniy wings for her mother — this was very touching. Much time was spent putting together a video presentation with picture of family and friends which everyone enjoyed. - This presentation was fal- lowed by daughter Valerie Benoit singing, Whea mom blows out 80 candles — also very moving, Mrs. Billson then cut the cake,"which’was béaut tifully decorated by daugh- ter-in-law Beth Billson. The cake’s theme was the the family tree and ‘actual- ly Beth was responsible in starting and organizing the wonderful event. Olga Power, friend and representing the City of Terrace, read a congratu- latory message from the Mayor and council with several other important certificates read. A thank-you was given to everyone for coming and thanks to all those who from out of town. This was follawed by a sing-a- long with Dorothy and en- semble. Everyone sang many old-time favourite songs. And now a little history of Olwen Mary Billson (nee Griffith), Olwen was born on July 16, 1920 in a farm near Grand Prairie Alberta. She came from a family of six children: two sisters Mary and Frances, and three brothers Stanley, Billy and Edwin. In 1943, Olwen joined the air forces in Edmonton. After her training she later worked in Calgary as a transport driver and was sent oversees. One day, while on her knees pulling weeds a sha- dow appeared, As she looked up, a tall, hand- some air force officer said to her, “Some day you'll make a goad wife.” When she later returned to the barracks, she (old her friends (hat she had met the mon she will marry. Mr. and Mrs. Billsan had five children — sons, George, David and Victor Junior and daughters, Dor- othy and Valerie. And far.
