Twelve firefighters and two instructors from nine different B.C. airports, some from as far away. as Victoria and Kam- ‘loops, came to Terrace to take | what would work best in certain situations," said Jules Cosselte, emergency response services officer from the Van- couver regional office. Instructors used old oil and gas tanks, laid oul to resemble a commuter-sized airplane. Three hundred gallons of un- leaded automotive fuel, which bums in a fashion similar to aviation fuel, were used per fire, Once the airplane and sur- rounding area was soaked with race fast week for a training course. Once the plane was igniled the drivers of two firetrucks wailing nearby pauscd to determine the’ direction the wind was blowing, and drove toward the fire with the wind at their backs, to keep the smoke and heat away. The Terrace airport is a par- ticularly good location for an exercise since the wind switches direclion frequently, explained Cossettc. He went to L.A, on his own va- cation time to ride along with fire fighters ihere and to learn about their techniques. He knew about the riots before he got on the plane in Vancouver. "Tt didn’t deter me,” he said on returning to Terrace last week. "I recognized that that in itself would be quite an adventure.” Beckett arrived Aprif 30 -- the morning after the surprise acquit- tal of police officers charged with the beating of Rodney King -- to find a city in flames. “It was like being in a war zone," he said. "My mouth was wide open in awe at this terrible devastation that was happening. Just tverywhere places were on fire." Although all such ride-along programs had been cancelled, Beckett says an exception was made in his case. After signing a waiver and being issued a flak - jacket, he was whisked off to a heavily guarded police and fire command centre was thrown into action. "We continued al} afternoon, literally going from fire to fire to fire," Beckett said. "In the eve- ning we would pass four or five fires on the way to our assigned fire." "Everywhere we were driving there were large plumes of smoke.” At one point, Beckett and the fire fighters in the truck appar- ently came under sniper fire. Although Beckett noticed noth- ing, a California Highway Patrol Officer later mentioned seeing a " bullet ricochet off the pavement __ infront of the truck. Beckett said he was surprised at how opportunistic :.the looters Witness A. inferno Bob Beckett were, He said be and other fire fighters battling one blaze in south-central L.A., wearing full breathing apparatus, had to con- tend with looters trying to get in- side the buming building. "Looters were coming by us and going in the back door,” he said. "It was just hoodlums, in my estimation, taking advantage of a situation," he said, adding that for every rioter screaming obscenities at them there were dozens of concerned citizens helping them out. "It was an experience of a lifetime," Beckett said, but noted that the desperation of the situa- tion had an effect on what could be leamed. "The fire fighting. was not textbook fire fighting," he said, noting that procedures go out the window under such circum- stances, "Tt was roll up, put lots of water on, and roll on to the next onc." Beckett also did an cight-hour shift with a paramedic unit.
