Organizers of. last year’s re- vised. hockey: school setup are . seeking further improvement for _ the:two-week session at the Ter- race Arena this August 14 to 26. Although the °88 event was . ‘ highly successful, new innova- tions for °89 are expected to: make the school and summer night league even more enticing. . Minor hockey’s co-ordinating director Jake DeJong says ’ they’ve added at least eight more- instructors. for a better ratio of instructor-to-student. _ With more on-ice instructors we'll be able to deal with young- sters showing standout prob- lems,” DeJong said. _ “Another reason is that, with ’ a fewer number of instructors available, most were putting in too much time — some working, from early morning right into late night.’’ Last year’s total is being. in- creased to at least 20. As for fees, it’s still $100 for . one week, but those wishing to _go for two weeks will now pay only $175. . - Returning instructors include Jeff Sharples; Wade Flaherty, Rod Philpot, Ian Alger, Tony Hildebrand, Frank Biller, Brad Trudeau, Jim Klonarakis and Mario Desjardins. _ Newcomers include Jay Glass of Kitimat (UBC), Simon Dodd (former Minnesota college - player), Shane Maitland (Kelowna Packers), Mark Grey- eyes (Portland Winterhawks), and possibly one or two each . from Victoria Cougars and the Winterhawks. “One top pro prospect we hope to land is Chad Biafore of Portland. He was named best defenceman at the world junior. “championship last December,” DeJong said. _ “Due to an unexpected rTe- ‘sponse to a lack of. camp souvenirs last year, we've ordered up an array of T-shirts, golf shirts, hats arid so on to sell during camp sessions. “It’s not a money-making venture. Prices will be slightly — over wholesale cost so we can break even on the venture.”’ Another stimulant to the. school is a one-day golf tourna- ~ ment on Sunday, Aug. 20 at the __ Skeena Valley Golf and Country Club. *Tt’s called the Celebrity Hockey School Golf Tourney, and we’re attempting to get a few NHL players to attend. It’s an off-day for the school, so. golf will be the niain extra at- traction. Full details are not yet worked out,’’ explained De-- Jong.
