Bowlers meet in Thunder Bay Aprif 27th, 1978 will see 26 young bowlers con- verge on Thunder Bay, Ontario to compete in the 14th Annual National Youth Bowling Council 5-, Pin Championships. They are the end result of some 73,000 youngsters who participated in elimination rounds consisting of house, zone, and provincial playdowns. For over a year now, the host committee in Thunder Bay has been hard al work securing billet homes for the competitors and. making various other arrangements. They will reap the fruits of their untiring efforts on April 28th, 29th, and 30th as the 276 Provincial Cham- picns, representing 10 provinces and 1 territory take to the lanes to compete for national titles and the coveted gold, silver and bronze medallions in the following categories: 11 Years of Age and Under-Bantam boys singles, Bantam boys teams, Bantam girls singles, Bantam Girls teams. 14 years of age and under-Junior boys singles, Junior Boys teams, Junior Girls Singles, Junior Girls teams. 18 Years of Age and . Under Senior Boys singles, Senior Boys teams, Senior Girls __ Singles, Senior Girls teams. A list of competitors is attached. All singles will compete at Superior Bowl; all girls teams at Galazy Lanes; and ail boys teams at Playtime Lanes.The Championship will be conducted on a round robin, match play basis, The teams will bowl 3 games against each province and the - singles 2 games against each province. One point will be awarded for each fame-won. . Seven { competitors are ‘former Canadian Champions. Valerie Hoppe of Thompson, Manitoba won a gold medal in the Bantam Girls Singles in 1975 while Chris Ahronson of St. Albert, Alberta won the same- event in 1974. Both girls will meet head on this year in the Senior Girls Singles Divison. Manitoba's Senior Boys Team from Winnipeg should prove to be ex- tremely tough. They racked up the highest | out: of the’ 276°. team total of 4541 in provincial cham- pionships across the country, Team members Andy Stoddart and Tom McEachern won gold medals in 1977 on the Senior Boys team while Kirby Morrison won his gold medal as a member of the 1972 Bantam Boys Championship Team. Southern Ontario’s Junior Girls Team from Markham scored 3214 at the provincial finals to lead the nation. Team members Shirley Matus and Susan MacKenzie won gold medals in 1976 in, the Bantam Girls Team Divison and their prior experience in _an- tional competition will no doubt provide incentive to the entire team in their quest for gold in 1978. The best crowd ever is expected to attend the 1978 edition of the National Youth Bowling Council 5- Pin Championships.
