Review A ‘one forest’ deal 0 one sincerely concerned with the problems of U.S.-Canada urade, or for that matter trade with any country, can look upon artificial trade restrictions, bar- riers, or other political obstruc- tions with any feeling other than dismay. While we want all the mutually advantageous trade possible with the U.S., most Canadians would prefer to see the bulk of our rich natural resources processed at home and the inter-flow of trade between the U.S. and Canada geared more closely to maufactur- es. Then we would know that our jobs and our potential industries don’t go south with our resour- ces. But unfortunately, for Canada, our political pundits, whether Tory, Liberal or Socred, don’t see it this way. These resources “give away’ brokers, interested primar- ily in the fast buck and kowtow- ing to insatiable U.S. demands, are ready to surrender Canada lock, stock, and barrel to Wash- ington, with our new Liberal gov- ernment setting the tone. It was therefore, no great sur- prise to hear provincial Liberal leader Ray Perrault advocating last week that “the forests of the West from Alaska to California EDITORIAL PAGE should be considered one forest . to meet the needs of the total North American market.” Perrauit adds that “once the concept of total forest use, disre- guarding artifical borders, is ac- cepted ...”’, B.C.s forest industry would expand? This is the new Liberal version of “Custom Union”’ applied to the forest industry of B.C., a fitting twin to the upcoming Liberal- Socred give-away of the Colum- bia River to the U.S. power trusts. Now Perrault wants to declare the whole Northwest a“one for- est”’ area, in order that the U.S. lumber trusts, already deeply en- trenched in B.C.’s forest industry, will be relieved of restrictive across-the-border trade encum- berances? To his “‘one forest” gesture to the U.S. lumber barons, Mr. Per- rault added his classical punch- line; .“This is one of the reasons why we welcome Mr. Pearson’s initiative.” Such “initiative” which cost the U.S. trusts quite a few millions in . Liberal election slush funds, will prove a much more costly item to Canadians if Perrault’s “‘one for- est” ever gets going, as a substi- tute for legitimate U.S -Canada or other foreign trade? Editorial comment... When Uncle Sam brought thousands of Cuban “refugee heroes” to Miami, Florida to act as counter-revolutionaries, the Holy Willies piously “thanked God” for this “Christian nation.’’- But monopoly is primarily in- terested in profit, whether it be from refugees or rotten eggs. - Miami AFL-CIO unions are now stripping away the “‘christ- ian’’curtain. Prior to the coming of the Cubans, the Negro workers in Florida were the chief victims of low-paid and discriminatory hiring practices. Now however, the down-grad- ing is still going down. The bosses ~ are replacing Negro workers with Cuban “refugees” and at wage levels below that paid to the Ne- ~ groes. The result—for the Negro people, mass destitution, hunger and want; for the Cuban “heroes’’ a starvation level, and for the bosses bigger profits. Truly a dollar “christianity,” with a low premium on Cuban “refugees.” * “Free West’ gabblers make much ado about the Soviet people being “uninformed,” “kept in the dark’ and so forth, eas world events. And no pages wasted on high- pressure advts or “‘funnies.’’ How terrible? Better revise that “‘kept in the dark” gag? Crush this The long-sustained and mount- ing attacks of big monopoly against the economic and social stand- ars of labor and the people, coupl- ed with its intensified drive to nuclearize the cold war, is now being agumented by another “al- ly”’; that of fascist-diseased rats emerging from their holes to spread political and race hatreds under cover of reaction’s attacks. History provides us with a grim reminder of this swastika-bedeck- ed product of capitalist reaction. For too often however, we shut our eyes, attempting to pretend it doesn’t, and just couldn’t happen here? In last week’s edition of this paper we reproduced a section of the U.S. Nazi party’s “program”, now circulating in the Canadian mails; a “program” promoting race hatreds, anti-Semitism, gen- ocide and organized violence again- st every expression of democracy and human wellbeing. With this foul literature are threats against individuals and wanton acts of vandalism and de- secration upon Jewish places of worship and -culture all across Canada. It is also noteworthy that while ‘Canada’s political police, the RC MP are busily engaged ‘“‘investi- gating”’ student activities in uni- versities, plus the progressive views of university faculty per- sonnel, in addition to their “nor- mal” chores of snooping on all segments of progressive labor, cul- tural and educational organiza- tions, the emergence of Nazi race hatreds and incitements in vio- lence, goes unheeded. This “oversight” is not acciden- tal. In this coldwar era, directed against the countries of Social- ism and all progressive ideology, . the ‘forgive and forget” formula of reaction in seeking to make the dregs of Hitlerism who now rule ® reptile West Germany our closest “ally”, seeps down into every political fa- cet of our boasted “‘way-of-life.” Hence we find numerous of the political spokesmen of monopoly, be they Tory, Liberal or Socred, who “patronize” peoples who are the targets of Nazi hate, and in doing so expose that inherent ide- ology of “superiority” on which Hitler and the nazi scum who sur- vived him, build their infamous “master-race”’ hate theories. In The Province of May 15 is a story about Socred Highway Min- ister Gaglardi as the guest speak- er at a prominent J p88 organiz- ~ ation dinner. We don’t know if all the jocular cracks made by “Flying Phil” are correctly reported or not, but when one boasts of having a “big curving nose and _protruding eyes,’ and how his young son managed to “bargain” in a Jewish store” and talk the proprietor “in- to selling him a $55-suit for $25,” that is a typical brand of “patron- age’ and philosophy upon which anti-Semitism feeds and grows. If the Province story is authentic, then the most charitable thing that can be said of the minister is that he is deplorably ignorant. It is this kind of ignorance on which anti-Semitism and race hat- reds feed; the kind of “patronage”’ that is only a couple of jumps away from U.S. nazi Lincoln Rockwell’s Jewish “extermina- tion”’ insanities. : We “deplore” the events in Bir- mingham, Alabama, the racist persecution against the Negro peo- ples in Africa. We also “‘deplore”’ the persecution, vandalism and violence against the Jewish peo- ple—anywhere. What we have to remember is that it all stems from the multi- arsenal of capitalist reaction—and take these steps to end it—before it is too late. and for Sarwar: of postage in ¢ash — Tom McEwen orkers who get chewed up by police dogs on picket lines will have to adopt more of a sport- ing attitude from now on. Over in Norfolk, Merrie England, according to a British Daily Worker editorial, it seems a bunch 9f ban-the-bomb demonstrators stuck a few buns and butter rolls well dipped in ani- seed oil in their lunch bags, to feed the police dogs with. At one ban- the-bomb demonstration there were some 30 to 35 of these ‘“‘man’s best friend” on patrol to maintain “‘lor’n order”’. Now is there is anything a pooch cannot resist it is an aniseed tidbit. In addition to its being appetizing it has a tendency to gum up the canine scent sense. Hence, accord- ing to a young rookie spokesman for the cops, the “dogs tackle the aniseed instead of the intruders”. In fact the cop waxed real patri- otic on the subject, pointing out that this sort of business “‘is not playing the game. It is more or less tantamount to putting marbles un- der horses’ feet. Aniseed would lead the dogs on a false scent. It just shows how low some people | ‘bama, Eugene ders to his police captain: “Look at ‘em run. Bring the dogs. Let these will go”. The the Daily Worker adds the punch-line to this ‘new look” on British sportsmanship and _ fair play; “Gad, sir, you've hit the nail right on the head. These anti-bomb types are utter cads. Any gentle- man would be proud to be bitten by a patriotic police dog. “But these rotters are no better than the Negroes in Alabama, who also object to being set on by dogs. “If every Tom, Dick and Harry is going to carry around his own, Independent Aniseed Deterrent and turn police dogs into the nuclear disarmer’s best friend, we might as well send all the captivated canines to the Battersea Dog’s Home. “Britain will never tolerate sub- versive propaganda saying ‘Police dogs of the world unite; You have nothing to lose but your chains- you have an aniseed bun to win”. .."We shall march forward into the future with our fighting slo- gans: ‘Play the game — Keep the ou Bomb — Dog bites man By Gad, sir, this aniseed just isn’t cricket. What sort of ‘‘patriot” ' is it who resorts to such low tactics to avoid being bitten by a “‘patri- otic” dog? % * * And down in Birmingham, Ala- racist police commissioner “Bull” Connor shouts or- people come to the corner, serg- eant, I want to see the dogs work”. In addition to savage police dogs tearing at Negro-American flesh, “Bull” Connor and his segregation- ist forces of racist “law and order” have another terror weapon. This is an electrically-charged prod, known as a “cattle shocker”, which inflicts a severe electric shock when jabbed on the body of a Negro-American demonstrator. To the peaceful pleas and demon- strations of the Southern Negro people for equality and the simple elementary rights of citizenship, im- plicit in the Constitution ang Bill. of Rights of the United States of America, the Ku Klux Klan racists and segregationists have one reply, and one only wherever the foul mentality of ‘‘white supremacy” dominates. Powerful fire hoses, savage po- lice dogs, electric-charged “cattle prodders”, inhuman police savag- ery, bombing of Negro homes, cold- bloodeq murder and lynching of Negro people. In one word, the ruthless barbarism of the _ Bor- gias in a 20th century setting? ' This in a land, governed by a bil- lionaire cabal, which presumes to “lead” the world to a way-of-life, which boasts its civilized achieve- ments — and seeks to hide :its in- famous barbarities behind the spe- cious and meaningless words of “peace”, order and good govern- ment’’?
