Randy Tait, president of the former Kitimat District Teachers’ Association (KDTA), said the association re- presenting school districts has trashed the Kitimat con- tract because it has now been absorbed into the Terrace contract — under orders from the B.C. Public Schools Employers’ Association. : Tait said union dues are being deducted from the pay- cheques of Kitimat teachers and forwarded to the Ter- race and District Teachers’ Union. About 25 teachers from the Aluminum City packed the first board meeting of the school year in Terrace Sept. 11 to protest the loss of their contract. Mount Elizabeth Senior Secondary teacher Dave Dur- ant asked the board if it would recognize the KDTA’s right to exist. Durant also criticized two trustees who are members of unions themselves — Kitimat’s Peter King and Barry Pankhurst. “Why would you choose to participate in union busting at its absolute lowest?” Durant wondered. Pankhurst rankled at the suggestion. “I just want to stress that | did not engage in union busting,” he said, adding school trustees were kept in the dark about the province’s decision to disband the KDTA and union lo- cals in eight other amalgamated school districts. where all of your printing and copying needs are completed with fast service at reasonable prices. The government also announced that nine collective agreements in amalgamated school districts — including the Kilimat agreement — would be eliminated. That means Kitimat teachers will eventaully be lumped in with the Terrace agreement when the Kitimat agreement expires in 2004, The Terrace teachers’ union is now recognized as the sole bargaining unit for the district. Trustees told Kitimat teachers they had no control over the decision — and no chance to object. “We got a press release. This is how we found out,” Pankhurst said. Kitimat trustee Peter King added trustees take an oath to uphold the school act,-so they’re required to abide by the legislation eliminating the Kitimat contract. The president of the Terrace and District Teachers’ ? Union (TDTU) said both unions and the Coast Moun- i BEAT THE COLDBI' tains School District had expected the Kitimat contract, [} 4. with our winter Gold package, yaur vahicle will i and the KDTA to remain in effect for another year. jy be more thon ready to face our rough winters! ft - “Our understanding is. that things would continue QF... | GOLD ans SBA under the status quo between the KDTA and the TDTU,” i.
