AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 10, 1994 Council Shorts Tax breaks finalized A TOTAL of 34 properties in the city will get full or partiai tax breaks next year. Under the Municipal Act, all churches, hospitals, schools and homes for the elderly into which the province put money are aulo- matically exempted from municipal taxes. Council :also has the power to exempt certain recreational facilities and land-buildings owned by a charity and run as 4 non- profit operation. In order to be exempted, the properties must be specified in a by-law that must be passed this month. That by-law went through Monday night and listed 34 properties including 20 churches, three Health Care society facilities, the Veritas and Centennial Christian schools, Tuck. Ave. Seniors home and eight other properties including the Kin Hut and curling club. . | Drainage cost climbs . COUNCIL HAS okayed spending an extra $15,000 on the Cooper Drive drainage project. Ina memo to council, engineering director Stew Christensen ex- plained the extra money was needed because the pipe size had been increased to handle drainage from Highland Drive and com- plications caused by existing gas, sanitary sewer and water lines. He also noted the money could be covered by cost underruns on other projects. Art grant debate continues THE ART Association has again asked the city to make its grant a direct one rather than channeling it through the Arts Council. And the city has again declined todoso. Under the current system, the city makes a single grant to the Arts Council-which then apportions it among its member bodies. But that leads to inconsistency, says the association, noting its grant has fluctuated from $900 to $7,600 in recent years. Such variations in tum make it difficult top plan annual operations, il adds. ; The association also noted there was a spossibility of obtaining provincial grant money if the city were to give it a minimum of $5,000 annually. Council, however, has reaffirmed its position it will not issue grants to any individual member of the Aris Council. It will, how- ever, mect with that body to discuss how money it divides the city grant among its members, 2 Leo is Gone Fishing.
