Page B2 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 19, 1992 Three Cal graduates share | outstanding student a\ ‘Here ’n There” | by Yvonne Moen Each year at graduation time, a student is awarded the outsland- ing student award: This. award can be shared by up to three stu- dents, and this year .the~ three chosen were -Lung Liu, Heather Dreger and Dennis Venema. I featured Lung ‘Liu last week, and this week I will tell you about the other two students. Heather was born in Terrace on December 23 1974. She started school al Parkside elementary — her first teacher was Mrs, Keen- leyside — and then went onto — Clarence Michael, Skeena and _ graduated -from Caledonia last June with the class of 1992. Over the years, Heather has been involved in fine arts pro- grains. She was vice-president of the Caledonia music department — her favourite instruments are the flute and bass - and this year was on the executive council, Upon graduation, Heather received the. Caledonia music citizenship award, and was the tap crealive writing student and fap westent civilization student. She received honourable mention in the UBC essay competition, and won the grade 12 schoal ser- viec award. . From 1988-92 Heather has been an honour roll student. She plans to attend UBC in‘the fall, pursu- ing a bachelors degree in music education and a masters in per- formance, leading: to an orchestral career. - Two scholarships, $650 from the Terrace and District Arts Council and $350 from the Ter- race and District Teachers Union, _ will help Heather with her tuition. Dennis Veneina, the other stu- dent who shared the outslanding’ award, was bor on July 5, 1974, in Terrace, ; ‘Deinis started school at Kiti K’Shan in Mrs. Gough’s class. He went onto the Terrace Al liance school, and for grades 7-9 moved to Victoria with his family to altend the Pacific Christian. High School. Key health care industry workers in hospital, mental health, con- tinuing care, social service agencies, health care unions, public health, as well as clected officials and service consumers will be participants. . They'll meet to discuss changes in health care in the north. Miss Terrace heads to PNE DANA JOHANSON, the last Miss Terrace, arrived in Vancouver on Monday to represent Terrace in the first-ever PNE Youth Am-. bassador Contest. Next year, Tcrrace’s representative will also be a youth ambassador. ~ When Miss PNE 1991 Kim Van De'Perre steps onto the slage Au- gust 21, it will signify the end of a 44-year-old tradition. The Youth Ambassador Contest allows the entry of bath male and female con- testants. . Johanson is one of 47 young people representing B.C. com- munities, Semi-finals will be on August 20, and the final show on August 21. ; The PNE youth ambassador and deputy youth ambassador will be December, 1988, just in time for the teachers’ strike. He attended Skeena for the remainder of grade 9, then went on to Caledonia to ‘complete high school. ‘A few other awards Dennis has © received are: Grade 10 subject ‘awards in math, science, social studies, French, woodwork, draft- ing aud PE, Dennis wes the top arls and science student, and said the teacher who inspired him the most was Mr. Wootlon, and he thanks Mr. Inglis for explaining high school math. Dennis plans to attend UBC for ~ selected on the basis of their communily achievements, voluntecr contributions, scholastic progress aad public speaking ability. Fall Fair needs volunteers THE FALL FAIR bas grown to be a major attraction in recent years with many popular cvents that draw large crowds. Logger sports and the heavy horse pull will be back again, as will the Skeena Valley Car Club’s show and shine, the 4-H displays and. auction, and the exhibit hall, New to the fair this year will be helicopter rides, the Green Flyer (a children’s ride) and a video game arcade for the young and young at heart.
