Over 21 residential break and enters have taken place in the last month and appear to be on the increase, said con- stable Ewen Harvie of the Terrace Crime Pre- vention unit. Items that have been stolen such as radios, bicycles, jewelery and other valuables have not been marked for iden- tification when re- covered, he noted. Some of the break-ins, in fact, have been walk- ins because some resi- dents fail to lock up their homes when no one is at home, Harvie said. Residential break-ins are increasing and the majority of the break and enters take place during daylight hours. Although that is the case, we have not receiv- ed any increase in the amount of people calling us who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area, Harvie said. We depend on the community as a whole to assist us in the apprehen- sion of culprits upsetting their community with these acts, he added. The Neighborhood Watch program is available in Terrace and area but is not being us- ed, in most cases, to its best potential, Harvie ex- plained. - Police are limited due to manpower restrictions and geographic layout in the amount of area they have to cover on patrols. Their one set of eyes and ears can be greatly en- hanced by the hundreds of eyes and ears the public have. If you hear or see anything suspicious, call the R.C.M.P. and report it. We would rather check out something before the fact than after, Harvie said. The public, by help- ing, are really helping their own community and making it a safer place for everyone and that is what Community Crime “Prevention is all about.
