Simpson Company in recognition of the crew's safety efforts for the year was eitended by nearly three hun- dred employees, their wives and guests January 16, in Kelowna. Following the Banquet, a dance was held, sponsored by S. M. Simpson Sub-Local of Local 1-423 IWA. Main highlight of the even- ing was the presentation of safety awards to employees. One of the top awards, the H. B. Simpson Shield, pre- sented annually to the em- ployee who by “precept and example” has done the most for safety in the Plant, was won by Jack Welder, Joint Safety Committee Chairman, who also received an engrav- ed travelling clock. The Power House Team was judged the best safety team in 1964 and awarded the S. M. Simpson Shield. The Team Captain, Frank Kirsch- ner received the shield and each: member was presented with an embossed wallet. A surprise presentation of a gold watch was made to W. “S W. “Bud” Newick for work- ing over twenty-five years without a compensable acci- dent. Jim Jeffers, Fower House engineer, was ’ presented with a prize by Bill Schumaker, President of Local 1-423 IWA, for his safety suggestion bas- ed on the printing of an em- ployees’ magazine in the Pow- er House Team. Art Beliveau, chip loader man, was awarded second ' prize for his suggestions to utilize a crank or wheel to turn a shaft in rotating chip- per knives. Presentations were also made to employees having fifteen years or more service without a compensable acci- dent and to past Team Cap- tains and new Team Cap- tain, Ken Howika. ; The Sub-Local officers have announced that the. dance following the Banquet proved such a tremendous success that it will be staged again next year.
