BACKGROUND & COMMENTS: Attached is a letter from a resident of 1940 Warwick Crescent requesting that the City construct a handicap curb letdown at the intersection of Pitt River Rd. and Mary Hill Rd. There are standard letdowns on the southeast corner and the northwest comer with sidewalks leading to these comers. An asphalt curb letdown is located on the southwest corer. It is not as per standard requirements, and use of it can be a safety hazard for those wishing to cross Pitt River Rd.(See Fig. 1) REQUIRED WORK: Two options would alleviate the concen about access at this intersection: Option | Leave existing asphalt curb letdown in it’s present condition and include it in plans for future upgrading. Option 2 Install standard concrete curb letdown and upgrade 6m portion of curb lying to the west of the southwest comer. cost of: wheel chair letdown= approx. 6m additional curb @ $88/m= contingencies (15%)= . TOTAL= say Option 1 does. not satisfy the safety and standard requirements for curbs and curb letdowns. Th asphalt letdown is functional for those crossing Mary Hill Rd. but it is awkward, because of it one-way direction, for people wishing to cross Pitt R. Rd.(See Fig.2) Option 2 would improve access at this intersection and satisfy safety requirements imunediately. - ‘ Anne T.Pynenburg / Project Technician attachments
