LATE ITEM: From the City of Nelson, January 8th, 1990 regarding Royal Canadian Mounted Police Dress Code. Moved by Aiderman Farnworth: Seconded by Alderman Gates: That whereas Canada is a nation of many ethnic, religious and cultural communities whose future well-being is inextricably bound to the spirit of understanding and tolerance these many communities demonstrate toward each other; And Whereas it is widely accepted that our national institutions, including our national police force, have an obligation to reflect the multicultural makeup of Canadian society; And Whereas the RCMP have acknowledged the necessity of encouraging members of visible minority communities to join the force; Now Therefore the Council resolves to endorse the actions of the Commissioner of the RCMP in requesting that the dress code of the force be amended so as to accommodate the religious obligations of the Sikh community in Canada; And Further this Council resolves to forward this resolution to the L Solicitor General and the Prime Minister of Canada.
