Another “premiere” at the _ a a a _ x ‘ a Ss a ive-By-Frive Well friends, now that we have the Christmas season safely in hand and everyone has that good feeling of peace on earth and SO on, lets raise a little Hi . . with the sub list of P.A. Last week in this column we started a campaign to bring in 1000 new subs by the end of January; we named some people whom we expect to bring in at least one, but there were scads of other people whom we expect to bring them in too. Im the final analysis, the proof of the pudding will be in the éating and we will see who lives up to our expectations, the list of names that will really tell the story will be the one that lists the accomplishment of 1000 ighti a eos p new subs for our Hepuns labor So try to get your sub in by the end of the first week in January, from then on we shall report who’s who. Now we come to five by five. The five by five names are really coming in from the outside points with an enthusiasm that really sends me. Would like our good friend Sam English to take a bow and also O. H. Bruning of McBride, B.C., and L. Glarke and H. Gallant from Victoria, Irving Floyd Mortensen, North Vancouver, and Hid Pearce, Paul Kindiak, John Nyman, Townsite Britannia Mines, as well as BH. Anderson and Hd Leclerc. Here in Vancouver, f am still awaiting organized reports from our permanent press committees. However here we also have some good performers, among whom are John Goss, Lena Lipsey, Margaret Shelton, Don Barbour, Steve Kovich, Ken Williams, Ed Dotzler and Al Grinkus. What is required now friends, that we have our cards and materials available, is organized consistent werk. Ghairmen of these permanent press committees: First of all get your com- mittee organized, so that each member has a thorough grasp of the organizational plan as well as the political necessity of putting over P.A. From there on its question of throwing out those feet and going to town. Take that flock of membership cards and enroll everyone you can. Keep them moving in here in a steady stream. ; From now on I am going to report performance from the permanent press committees by name, and I am looking to our talented friend from South Vancouver, Floyd Anderson, to make good his promise that South Van. will set the pace. Gun- nar Nyberg, chairman of the Grandview press committee re- ports that Grandview will come into its own again in five by five performance. Thats a big order, Gunnar, but LI believe that Grandview can do it. And now let us hear from Hastings East, who turned in such a good performance in the last drive, and Pairview of press drives fame; and what of good old Kitsilano; to say nothing of Burrard East, the winners, and West End with all its outstanding people, and Victory Square so firmly rooted in the proletarian population in the basie industries of our prov- jnee: and the Fast End and Georgia committees with their long tradition of anti-fascist struggle; surely in all these places we will find that devotion to the workers press that is the test of political understanding. And what of North Burnaby, fresh from their outstanding progressive electoral victories; surely here it will be realized that all this progressive thought and action must be consolidated in a virile circulation for the labor press; and North Vancouver with all its accomplishments in the field of community work, and South Hill, that small but solid committee. : Next week we want to report that. every committee in our feeling wont be hurt, not a wee bit, if our good friend Harry Drake at Silverton should make good his promise and really have things rolling up there by that time. And also what about you George Hawk over in Dunean, I know we'll be hearing from you, but can’t we do it before we go to press next time? And in the meantime, we know that Sam English will keep the miners moving on the labor press. We would like to hear from George Anderson at Copper Mountain and our old friend Frank Halvorsen at Kamloops. And what of all those reports — orf activities in the outside points? Don’t the folks up there like to tell the folks down here what goes on, so that our supporters up there can read about their own activities? Sure they do, so let’s have them. And now I must sign off until five by five time next week, and remember that all our supporters like to see P. ‘A. in all the old familiar places, and a lot of new ones too. Well do our best but it is really up to you. It’s our dream to have everybody on a five by five team. P. A. will show the people the way, if you show the people PA sreater Vancouver area has returns in with more on the way, and Duplessis Challenged In Court MONTREAL, Que. — The Du- plessis Government, through its one-man Givil Service Commis- sion appointee, J. E. Laforee, has been hailed into Superior Court for dismissing the three- man Givil Service Commission set up by the Godbout regime. The Duplessis action is de- scribed as “illegal, irregular” and. “in contravention of the legislation which set up the Commission~” The charge, brought by a dis- charged member of the Quebec Givil Service, follows a demand of ex-Premier Godbout that Du- plessis restore wage increases granted by the former govern- ment, and discontinue his whole- sale dismissal .of government workers to make room for Union Nationale “ward-heelers.” LABOR PROTESTS An attempt by Duplessis to quietly introduce new restric- tions to labor and trade union organization, through the pass- ing of special amendments by the Quebec Labor Relations Board to the province’s labor legislation Bill 3, was strongly condemned by Montreal Labor Council (CCL) in a resolution to the Department of Labor, A special delegation from Council will interview the labor Board. J. Eugene Corbeil, vice-presi- dent of the ‘Council and a lead- ing official of the CBRE told the delegates that “only a united front of all locals could bring about a change in the matter.” R. J. Lamoureux, President of the Gouncil urged all CCL mem- bers to wire their protests to the provincial labor authorities.
