A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 3, 2003 Firefighter helps in Barriere - AS AN EXPERIENCED paramedic and firefighter, Peter Weeber is used to being in the middle of emergencies. But dealing with the aftermath of the wild fire that ravaged Barriere and surrounding communities in the North Thompson area is something comple- tely new to him. “We're helping people who have nothing ~ no in- surance, no food, no money, no clothes,” said Weeber, a City of Terrace firefighter who is in the middle of a stint as a Red Cross volunteer in Bar- riere. _ He and six other Red Cross volunteers spend their days interviewing and assisting fire victims. Their job is to provide short-term stability. to these who lost everything, giving them the. means to then begin putting their lives back together. “We can give them food, clothing, rent them a place,” Weeber told the Terrace Standard ina phone interview last week from Barriere. The aim is to provide a month’s worth of basic re- lief for people, but assis- lance can go on longer. Weeber and the other Red Cross volunteers work out of an office provided by the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Barriere. — Interviews with fire vic- tims can take up to two hours. It’s not just a matter ’ of filling out forms. “You're dealing with people who have everything,” Weeber said. He begins by asking, “What can 1 do for you tight now?’ And they tell me their story.” Some people fall apart and others are strong. “One man couldn’t un- derstand why his house. burned down, yet his shop was fine.” For those who perhaps are too proud or reluctant to seek help, Weeber and the others will visit them with a truck loaded with the basics. : “We feel good about being here,” he said. “We're from British Co- lumbia and these people are from British Colum- bia.” ; He's staying in Kam- loops, making the drive north to Barriere every day, The first few days, the smoke was so thick, he could barely see 100 feet ahead of him, “It's nothing like you have seen, You can be How you can help AND HERE’S a brief run- down of agencies and others involved in relief efforts for those affected: by the wild fires in south- ern B.C, 7 The Red Cross, which has stationed its northern volunteers (including some from here) down south, is accepling donations to the B,C. Forest Fire Response - Fund at 1-800-418-1111. Donations can also be made at financial institu- tidns, Canadian Tire and at Zellers. Save-On-Foods is tak- ing in points collected, Save-On will donate $1 and match it with another $1 and send © . it to the Red Cross. From now until Sept. 30, Denny’s Restaurant here is donating $1 from every Grand Slam meal, to the Red Cross fire relief fund. Monetary donations can also be dropped off al the Salvation Army Thrift Shop located at 4712 Keith Avenue. The Army has people al all wild fire assistance lo- cations. A temporary receipt will be issued and an offi- cial one will follow later. Cheques should be marked “fire assistance.” People can call the Army here at 635-1829 for more information. lost Save-On-More - points — for every 1,000 driving along and see three houses gone in a row and one is standing and then three burned again.” What’s striking to Wee- ber is not just the fire hav- ing destroyed homes. It also burned down a sawmill, the area's single largest direct and indirect employer, “That's a huge impact. It has bought this com- munity to a standstill,” said Weeber. “When we go back to Kamloops at night and turn on the TV and get caught up with the news, ‘it’s about Kelowna.” _ “I know that is over- whelming what is going on there but those people have insurance. The rural area here is different. People have no insur- ance.” Weeber is but one of several Terrace and area residents involved in relief efforts in the North Thompson area, ; Terrace fire chief Randy Smith was in Kam- “loops last week, working as an emergency services liaison through the Provin- cial Emergency Program, or PEP. It’s the second time this fire season Smith has been posted to Kamloops. This time, Smith is ac- companied by his wife, Donna, who is also part of _ the PEP presence. Maurie Hurst, the north- west PEP official based in Terrace, has been. in Kam- loops for some time as an assistant director. And local transportation ministry official Don Ram- say last week ended al- ‘most two weeks of work al “the provincial emergency operations centre-in Kam- loops, ‘He was also. connected © to PEP’s operations, Peter Weeber iy > We are about - | f — fun, Friendship, adventure and life Sparks: 5 - 6 Brownies: 7? -8 Guides: 9 - 12 Pathfinders: 12 - 15 Senior Branches: 15- 18+ —- — 1-800-565-8111* : Girl Guides . www.bc-girlguides.org “Guides... . : “This number wilt connect you directly with the : du Canada Gulding representative in your neighbourhood Canadad PURCHASE FINANCING ~ FOR 60 MONTHS’ GET MORE. vi 5. ¥ 2003 PONTIAC SUNFIRE P2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX SE $L SEDAN «5-Year 100,000km POWERTRAIN WARRANTY with No Deductible -ALL NEW! 2.2L 140HP Engine :5-Speed Manual - Theft Deterrent System 60/40 Solit Rear Seat Tachometer + Child Security Rear Door Lacks $158 $1,940 DOWN PAYMENT $0 SECURITY DEPOSIT INCLUDES $1000 CREOIT4 CASH PURCHASE PRICE 11898 INCLUDES FREIGHT AND FOl .
