os Helen Hasselmyer and Yvonne Moen spent an afternoon last month with 16 performers from the singing group Up With People. The singers volunteered to help clean up Terrace. They collected around 35 bags of garbage. Flower boxes vandalized LAST. MONTH about 100 young people from Up With People, an interna- tional singing group, helped members of Ter- race’s Beautification Soc- iety clean up around town. We had the great, privi- lege of having these won- derful young people pick up garbage and dig up Weeds, © The group was split up into different areas of the city so specific areas could. get tidied up. Helen Haselmeyer and - myself spent the day with the Up With People gang picking up garbage from the CN station to the aver- pass. Our. group collected about 35 bags of litter. Chris }Hansen had a smaller group, which was in charge of weeding and cleaning up the area ‘around the four way stop in Thornhill. _. Another group put in several hours with Karen Westby shovelling gravel, taking and pulling weeds near the old Skeena bridge to'get it ready for a beauti- fication: project. Jackie Havenkamp: took - another group out to clean litter from our concrete planters . Meanwhile, Beautifica- tion president Beity HERE ‘N THERE YVONNE MOEN Campbell drove around making sure everyone was al right. : All of this was done under very wet weather conditions. Jt was a won- derful day spent with these young people who really want to make a difference in the world. A lot of work was done in just a few hours. I would have rather spent the day showing these wonderful young people around our com- munity rather than have them come and clean up after our own people who live here, I think its about, time every single person takes’ more pride in our com- munity. There are. still many dirty areas in our downtown area which need a lot of attention. If you own a business, please take a few minutes of your day to walk the area around your building, You might be surprised what you find. Just 30 min- utes of your day spent ti- dying up, would make a huge difference to the look of our downtown, Tam very disappointed and very discouraged over the recent vandalism to , the Beautification Socie- ty’s newly planted flower holders. The HovenKamp’s have been busy filling the con- crete flowers planters around the city with beau- tiful flowering plants. But within days of planting, there’s already been a lot, of vandalism. ‘Someone has been pulling out all the newly planted flowers and just leaving them there to die. How discouraging, especi- ally when volunteers work so hard to beautify Ter- race. With your help, maybe we can stop this king of unthoughtful vandalism. If you see or have seen ‘someone .vandalizing our planters or other flowers, call the RCMP or give one of our members a‘call. Our president’s phone number is 635-5221 (ask for Betty.) The biodegradable compost bags supplied by the City of Terrace have proven to be | unacceptable. For this reason the City will start picking up compost placed at the curbside in clear plastic bags. These clear bags may be purchased at several local stores. It is important to note that ONLY COMPOST IN CLEAR BAGS WILL BE PICKED UP, as the refuse collectors need to ascertain whether or not the material is acceptable. PLEASE NOTE: ®@ There is no bag limit on compost. @ The old biodegradable bags will continue to be picked up. @ Acceptable compost is: grass clippings, leaves and garden trimmings. If you have any questions, or require further information, please call Stewart Christensen, City Hall @ 638-4701. Please refer to your garbage calendar for the date of compost pick up In your area. We thank you for your continued support of the composting program.
