Firemen use a Vedder Lifting Bag to raise a station wagon over and simulate a crash site. Terrace Review — Wednesday, October 15, 1986. 13° Local firemen demonstrate | equipment and rescue techniques TERRACE — In the parking lot at Mce- Donald’s firemen from both the Terrace and Thornhill detachments recently provided local residents with insights in- to methods used by crew members in various rescue situations. Firemen simulated a motor vehicle crash by turning a station wagon on its site using a vedder lifting bag, which folds up like cusions and can exert enough pressure to right a car. The team members then cut a hole in the roof of the vehicle as spectators viewed the scene from behind ropes set up to separate the workmen at their tasks. . Terrace Fire Chief Clifford Best explained that in accidents operators of motor vehicles are sometimes pinned behind the steer- ing column and cutting tongs attached to the Jaws of Life can be used to snip through the main beam on each side of the windshield so that the roof of the car can be folded back Injured or trapped people can then ‘be removed from the vehi- cle this way when doors can not be’ pried open. - Art Hoving, Fire Chief for the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Depart- ment pointed out that the extendible ladder at- tached to one of the fire trucks was used to lift firefighters high in the air so they can spray water through a nozzle at fire sites, The “Sky Genie’ lad- der is also used to place firefighters in effective firefighting zones, Crew members rappel down a rope which extends from the ladder and can be swung away or towards a blaze through mechan- ical means by the oper- ator in.the fire truck. The demonstration was put on to promote the ‘Get Out Alive’ fire drill which was con- ducted Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. by Terrace residents and people on a nation wide basis. Residents in Terrace were encouraged to par- ticipate in the program and draw an escape plan from their homes then physically follow that route in the practise fire drill. © ae A fireman slides down the rope from the Sky Genie. simulated crash. .
