Shima, Hazelton Hospital Economize or Suffer A statement issued by the Royal Bank of Canada places the annual cost of conducting the business of the Federal and Pro- vineial Governments at $53.90 for each man, woman and child in this country. Eyen more alarming than the outlay for running expenses is the magnitude of Federal, Pro- vincial and municipal indebted- ness and the rapidity with which the same is growing. Figures recently given show that the net Federal indebtedness of Canada ig around two and a half billion dollars, and that this debt has been considerably more than doubled since 1918. The state- ment issued by the Royal Bank places the aggregate funded Pro- vincial debt of the nine provinces at close to $600,000,000 more, and ling increase of late years. In Alberta and Manitoba indebted- ness has been doubled in four years. In British Columbia it has been more than trebled. Jn Ontario there has been an increase from less than $67,000,000 to nearly $225,000,000 in funded indebted- ness. Municipal cbligations have also reached startling proportions, ten Canadian cities having combined obligations of $428,000,000. All of these cities save Vancouver have largely inereased their in- debtedness since 1919, the fund- ed debt of Toronto alone having one hundred and thirty-six and a half millions. The conclusion of the author of the bank cireular that ‘‘the fundamental need at present is a rigid poliey of economy in ex- penditures”’ is irresistible. In fact, any new tax should be bit- terly opposed. Goodness knows gas costs “now every cent that the article will bear and it pays taxes every time it changes hands already. The day for fool expenditures is gone. The pub- lic is already very rebellious over the enormous taxes being collect- ed by every agency, thatthe most fertile brains of the world can conceive.
