Traffic mirror to be replaced THE TRAFFIC MIRROR smashed by vandals at the corner of Munthe Ave, and Sparks St. last fall is finally being replaced, City director of engincering Stew Christensen said a stain- less stec] mirror could not be found, so the.same type. that was broken will be installed again, at a cost of $500. The 48-inch acrylic convex mirror garnered rave revicws from drivers who frequent the blind corner. But it lasted barcly twa days after it was installed before it was destroyed on Sept. 10, Christensen says city staff no longer believe the mirror was broken with a rock. “We belicve it was shat out, with a gun,”’ he said, Efforts will be made io make the new one more vandal-proof, he said. Christensen noted that the same kind of mirror has been used elsewhere in town — Skeena Cellulose’s log yard, for example. Councillor Ruth Hallock suggested a pressure-sensitive traffic light for vehicles turn- ing off of Munthe, But Christensen noted that would mean stopping traffic on a. very steep and some- times icy hill. The public works committee also rejected ‘a proposal from area resident Sabina Zutter, who suggested the city install speed bumps on Sparks. Councillor David Hull did note traffic tends to speed up the hill faster than it tavels on the flat. .
