What is the end of doubling up our steam and electric power every five ee to infinity if we don’t increase thought power? ... To me the whole lesson lies in this experiment. Can our society double its mind capacity? It must do it or die; and I see no reason why it may not widen its consciousness of complex conditions far enough to escape wreck; but it must hurry. Our power is always running ahead of our mind. —Henry Adams in a letter to Charles Milnes Gaskell, 1906 More to it... This black legislation was passed at the insistence of pulp and paper companies in Newfoundland, and with the aquiesance of the Liberal Party. Constitutionally, the Federal Government has the authority to disallow or cancel out Pro- vincial Legislation anda formal request was made to this effect by the CLC. Since that request was made continual questions were directed to the Prime Minister. His sole answer to each such question was that the matter was “under considera- tion,” (whatever that means). Told No Tinally, though, the siatutory time limit of one year expired. Again we asked the Prime Minister if his government had disallowed the Newfoundland ; Legislature. Then we were told NO. Actually, this negative deci- sion had been made months before. So Newfoundland’s infamous Legislation stays on the Statute Books. A legitimate union was smashed and the workers of Newfoundland accordingly de- nied their right to select a union of their own choice. Individual Rights Joey Smallwood, Newfound- land’s Liberal Premier must feel quite proud for having removed a basic human right. John Diefenbaker because of his negativistic attitude must feel equally proud.
