NO’XYA’ (Our Footprints) is a
collaboration between Headlines
Theatre (a westem theatre compa-
ny), the Gitksan and Wet’suwet’en
Hereditary Chiefs and many indi-
viduals in the Hazelton area.

Last week as part of a northwest
tour, Terrace and area school
students from Skeena and Thorn-
hill Junior Secondary and Clarence
Michiel Elementary were treated to
performances at the R.E.M. Lee
Theatre. The performances were
offered courtesy of the Terrace and
District Aris Council . and
coordinated by Terry Anderson
and Tom Walker.

Our Footprints is rooted in a time
and consciousness that gave birth
to the Chiefs’ court action against
the provincial and federal gove-
mments, in their struggle for the
right to self-government on 22,000
square miles of ancestral territory.
The play is, however, an under-
standing between cultures and
philosophies.

Our Footprints steps back in time
and gives a dramatized history of
the Gitksan and Wel’suwet’en
peoples and their interactions with
the white man, up to the present

day. Our Footsteps melds music,

dance, drama and political satire to
address the issues of residential

Our own Kathy Hanson from
Kitimat recently won the regional
finals of the Country Music Talent
Search 1990, held in Kelowna.
Kathy competed in her first-ever
country talent search this spring in
Terrace. Out of thirty-five talented
contestants from the northwest,
Kathy Hanson was declared the
northwest winner. On the final
night, April 2ist, she competed
with eight other finalists from as
. far away as Dease Lake. The
competition was co-sponsored by
CJFW-FM and the Northern Motor
Inn.

As noted in a Terrace Review

the northwest finals, she is a full-
time social worker in Kitimat. She
is twenty-nine years old and was
raised on a farm in Saskatchewan.
Kathy comes from a musical
family and put herself through
university singing with a band, She
is no stranger to the music busi-
ness or country life.

The Regicnal Finals in Kelowna
were held in-conjunction with the
popular Black Mountain Rodeo
festivities. Kathy performed to an
audience of approximately 1300 in
the Kelowna Roller Rink with six
other finalists from Prince George,
Kelowna, Kamloops, Williams
Lake, Vernon and Penticton.

chosen to compete in the Provin-
cials against three lower mainland

schools, indian agents, land owner-
ship, tradition hunting, fishing and
berry gathering grounds, clear-cut
logging, miil shut-downs and
blockades. .

Through visual’ representation of
tradition and "progress", physical
interaction with the audience and
verbal dialogue with comedic
moments, the story unfolds. The
native character James, upon being
offered alcohol, quips "My grand-
mother says if we drink that, it
will turn us white!"

The four actors Edward Astley,
Hal Blackwater, Sylvia-Anne
George and Sherri-Leé Guilbert
played a variely of characters and
also had backstage roles in the
production. The characters are

composiles based on real people.

They are drawn together and writ-
ten by David Diamond, with Hal
B. Blackwater, Lois Shannon and
Marie Wilson.

The co-production was first
written, built, rehearsed and per-
formed in the Gitksan and Wet’su-
wet’en territories in 1987. Spon-
sored by the Labour Council, it
was seen in Terrace at the R.E.M.
Lee Theatre on Sept. 12, 1987.
The native community has con-
tinued its involvement in the pro-
duction as consultants, visual art-
isis and performers, The play
includes several changes as the

situation in the "territories" has
evolved substantially since the play
was first written.

David Diamond, artistic director
describes the play as "a collabor-
ation on many levels; research,
writing, sets, props, costumes and
in the organizing infrastructure of
the project.... The celebration of our
differences is the well from which
the richness of the work
springs....we are connected to each
other in ways that we do not nece-
ssarily understand."

The play illustrates the value of
self-government, as basic as per-
sonal decision-making, as the
ultimate goal. "You don’t have to
be indian to practise self-governm-
ent. We look forward to all people
in the territory sharing in self-
government for a better future.

Mayor of Hazelton Alice Mait-
land calls it "a clear indication of
the Chiefs’ commitment to explain
issues surrounding aboriginal rights
and title to their neighbours and all
Canadians.

The powerful and provocative
drama Our Footprints kicks off an
international cultura! exchange
between the Gitksan and Wet’suw-
et’en and Maori peoples when il
opens in Hamilton, New Zealand
on June 28th.

minster, B.C. during the B.C.
Country Music Association Coun-
try Music Week.

‘There are over $44,000 in prizes
to be split between two of these
winners, including studio time to

record a ‘single’ at Occan Studios
in Vancouver. From there, it’s off
io the Nationals in Edmonton in
September.

This largest competition of its kind
in Canada brings out country talent
in every community and provides
the exposure required for stardom.
