With a 5,000-kilowatt capacity, it has been supplying electricity to industry and agri culture for the past two weeks. For the first time in the history of* mankind, ower are being harnessed for creation, not destruction. This historic advance, of infjn- itely greater world significance than the dropping of the first atom bomb on Hiroshima in August, 1945, was announced by the Soviet Council of Ministers here July 1. The apnouncement disclosed that Soviet scientists are at pre- sent working on projects for atomic power stations with a cap- acity of from 50,000 to 100,000 kilowatts. This is the first time that the Soviet Government has given details of its application of atomic energy to industrial pur- poses, though frequent refer- ences to general progress in this field have been made. In a speech to the Supreme Soviet in April, Premier Malen- kov spoke of “the ever-growing utilisation of atomic energy both in the interests of safeguarding the security of our Motherland and for peaceful industrial pur- poses.” The statement from the Coun- cil of Ministers said: “The work of designing and constructing the first industrial electric power station using atomic energy. has at present been ‘successfully completed by the efforts of Soviet scientists and engineers. The station has a useful capacity of 5,000 kilo- watts. “On June 27, 1954, an atomic 4lectrical power station was put into operation and produced elec trical current for. industrial un- dertakings and for agriculture in the nearby areas. “For the first time an industrial turbine is working not due to burning of coai or other kinds of fuel, but due. to atomic energy the mighty resources of, atomic produced by the fission of the nu- cleus of the uranium atom. “By the introduction of an atomic electric power station, a definite step has been taken to- ward the peaceful utilisation of atomic energy. “The Soviet scientists and en- giners are engaged on work to set up industrial power stations worked by atomic energy with a capacity of 50,000-100,000 kilo- watts.” H stands for H-bomb and for Hypocrisy Page 9 Canadian merchant marine would create jobs Page 10
