Page 2. The new "Viscount Middle School” will open in September, 1994 for a student population of about 600. As well, the old "Viscount Elementary School" will remain open with a student population of about 360 - 400 kids until the new "River Springs Elementary School” is open in December of 1994. This means about 1,000 kids will be attending these schools and, of course, many of these kids will be driven to school What we are facing now, and will be facing even more when these two schools are operating, is a tremendous increase in traffic on Oxford Street at or near the intersections of Salisbury Avenue and Dorset Avenue. The new Middle School apparently has a drop off and pick up leading out to the 1900 block Dorset Avenue at which time the cars can then drive north onto St. Anne Street or continue on Dorset Avenue out to Oxford Street. Oxford Street has always been a busy street but even more so the last couple of years. Several new developments have occurred in this neighbourhood during the past years with a large subdivision at the top of Oxford Street. This has, of course, increased the number of cars travelling on Oxford Street. As you may be aware there is a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Oxford Street and Lincoln Avenue, which is approximately five or six blocks from the intersection of Oxford Street and Salisbury Avenue where the cross walk is located to Viscount School. A traffic light was installed last year at the intersection of Oxford Street and Prairie Avenue, which is only one block from the intersection of Oxford Street and Salisbury Avenue where the cross walk to Viscount is located. The main problem now is the increased traffic flowing on Oxford Street which makes this cross walk wery unsafe. These cars are, of course, in a hurry speeding down Oxford Street and once they have passed the four-way stop at Oxford Street and Lincoln Avenue they speed up so that they can "make it through" the green light at Oxford Street and Prairie Avenue. The cross walk for the children attending. Viscount School located at Oxford Street and Salisbury Avenue ‘has, therefore, become a real nightmare due. to this increased traffic. There are two school zone signs posted on Oxford Street, but I do not believe that the signs are noticed because drivers are focused on the green light at Oxford Street and. Prairie Avenue or they have just made the turn from Prairie Avenue onto Oxford Street and are in the process of speeding up their cars. Viscount School cannot be seen when you travel on Oxford Street and, therefore, many drivers are oblivious and ignorant to the school zone signs - they only have eyes for that "green light" at Oxford Street and Prairie Avenue. There are no flashing lights or metal posts erected across Oxford Street with school zone signs on them by this cross walk.
