Robert deCotret Minister of the Environment House of Commons Room 5115 Centre Block Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Re: Tropospheric Ozone Concentration Forecast Dear Mr. deCotret: As environmental awareness heightens, the population of the North Fraser Valley is becoming concerned about the ievels of"ozone pollution” in our area. Our community, Maple Ridge, is located on the north shore of the Fraser River (50 km from Vancouver). As we understand it, the air flows carry the “orown plume" from Vancouver together with industrial (oil refineries etc.) pollution from the Indian Arm, to the end of the Fraser Valley, (Hope, 8.C.). It sometimes reverses direction under certain conditions, and returns to the ccast. Because of these circumstances, our air is much more polluted than the more densely populated urban centres nearby. A recent Vancouver Sun article stated that the air in the Fraser Valley is five times more polluted than the air in the Vancouver area. This is of growing concern to our community, especially to our increasing oopulations of both young families and seniors. Recently another article appeared in the Vancouver Sun warning of crop damage in the Fraser Valley due to ozone pollution (see enclosures). Our request to you, is that you establish a Tropospheric Ozone Concentration Forecast service, which would include levels of CO, NO2, SO2, and suspended particulates. This service could be accessed by our C.E.E.D. (Community Education on Environment and Development) Centre and be made available to our general population through our computerized Bulletin Board Service, or by telephone. {ITEM PAGE 59 {TER recycled «30% pom -conmernct
