Council urged the government
to negotiate suspension of tests,
independent of disarmament,
for some longer period than
one year.

GENEVA—The biggest-ever
conference of atom scientists
opened in Geneva this week to
reveal what has been done and
what can be done in the field
of atomics for peaceful pur-
poses.

More than 60 member coun-
tries and specialised agencies
are attending this second
United Nations international
conference to discuss among
other things, a global “blue-
print” for industrial atomic
power drawn from an inex-
haustible source of energy.

This is a problem with which
they have been grappling since
the first conference in 1955—
the possibilities of limitless
power from nuclear fusion, the
process which takes place in a
hydrogen bomb-explosion.

At present, all peaceful
atomic power is derived from
nuclear fission — the splitting
of the atom, chiefly using
uranium as fuel.

pool the most recent scientific
knowledge on specific uses of
nuclear energy, costs, disposal
of radioactive wastes, appara-
tus designs, and safety
measures for industrial
workers.

The immediate benefits to
under-developed countries of a
global nuclear power program
for peaceful uses may not be
immediate power production.

Instead it may lie in the ad-
vantages from radioactive iso-
topes, byproducts of reaction,
which have brought astonish-
ing advances in the medical
and agricultural fields.

The agricultural branch of
atomic science, which has
diminished past risks and in-
creased yields, could mean a
full larder for mankind for the
rest of his days.
