Barnes, who was recruited by the CIA to gather intelligence while a Member of the Green Berets sent to Salvador as advisors, told the News agency SALPRESS last Month that La Reina, in Chalatenango department, had been selected by U.S. for ex- perimentation in chemical warfare. The area was chosen, he said, because the mountainous terrain makes access difficult for jour- nalists. Barnes stated that the chemical and bacterial agents are introduced into springs, streams and rivers so that they reach their victims several miles away. Those who drink the contaminated water die shortly after or contract a deadly disease. Another method used involves artillery-fired shells armed with nerve gas heads.
