The NAACP defended Patterson
in 1917 when he was arrested for
opposing the Fiist World: War. In
1927, he was a leading participant
in the fight to save Sacco and Van-
zetti, framed workers, from the
frame-up which led to their execu-
ion. He was arrested three times
by authorities who tried to get
him to stop denouncing the frame-
up.

In 1931, Patterson entered the
defense of the Scottsboro Boys ar-
rested and framed in Alabama for
“rape” and sentenced to die. He
became head of the International
Labor Defense. .

In 1932, he brought Mother
Mooney to see President Roose-
velt who then phoned the Cali-

the Civil Rights Congress in De-
troit, and has led it ever since as
a forefront fighter in defense of
democratic liberty. He carried the
fight for Negro rights to the Unit-
ed Nations with the document,
“We Charge Genocide” for which
the Washington authorities took
away his passport.

Is there anything of “contempt”
for the American people or its
democratic institutions in this re-
cord of unceasing struggle for jus-
tice? The contempt has been on
the side of the men who have tried
to frame Patterson down through
the years. ;

Now they have him in jail and
hope to keep him there indefi-
nitely.

Labor warns, “has the objective
of justifying the holding of sum-
mary court-martial and thus pre-
venting the exercise of the right
of asylum, making it impossible
for the refugee to leave the coun-

Latest contribution by the United States to the farce
of Civil Defense against H-bomb attack was. disclosed here

It was an H-bomb alarm: for the home—‘‘a little thing one

was put to a private meeting of
the House of Representatives ap-
propriations committee in May.

Petterson was then pressing a
$150,000,000 program to prepare
for mass evacuation of U.S. cities
in an emergency.

Mass evacuation was an “urgent
necessity,” and the only practical
approach to the H-homb threat,

One study, he said, “showed that
we could have 22 million casual-
ties, of which I think seven million

A survey of one city with 1,240,-
000 people showed that, with ad-
vance warning but not evacuation,
631,000 people would be killed, or
51 percent.

With an effort at evacuation,
Peterson added, the same city
could reduce deaths to 27 percent.

“Life will become rudimentary
the minute one of these bombs
goes off,” he continued. ,

He said the U.S. government now
had medical supplies to care for
two million casualties for three
weeks. :

He conceded that shelter and
food for the millions who might
be evacuated would present a ter-
rific problem, because there might
be no city to return to.
