A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 12, 1998 People have talked about it for years but, with Icss than a year and a half to go until the new millenium, if you aren’t doing so already, it’s time to start worrying, espe- cially if you operate a busi- NESS. The “bug” will happen because many of the pro- grams that read dates, as most programs do, read only the Jast two digits. So the year 2000 will read ‘as OO on many computers, making them believe it is the year 1900 or making them incapable of under- standing the date altogether. Accounting systems could show that people have never payed their bills, Or the program that regu- lates the on switch on your computer could refuse to understand the date and you may not be able to turn your computer on at all. The real problem, how- ever, may come from ‘the networked nature of com- puter systems. Everything from interac machines and bank ma- chines to phone company records and traffic tights are computer-operated. **Most people don’t want to think about it,’ says Logan Dott, of Ikon Office Solutions. Dott says that with the decreasing cost of new Out & About New owners DAIRY QUEEN’S new owners are settling in after taking over the beginning of June. Company officials say it is loo early lo gauge the im- pact on employees. The two companies have 257 branches and satellites across Canada and the com- bined enterprise would make Superior the third largest propane distributor in North America. KFC talks to resume TALKS BETWEEN Ken- tucky Fried Chicken and the Canadian Auto Workers union are still on bold after the union's B.C. members rejected KFC's fina) offer in a July 22 vate, Bargaining will resume when the two parties work out a schedule. The 481 members who voted rejected the offer by a 53 to 47 per cent margin. TAT eae “READY Y FOR PIANO: LESSONS? | nS hardware, and the high cost of converting old hardware, many people are chosing to buy new equipment. Newer computers, built in the fast 16 months, don't have the millenium bug problem. But the problem isn’t limited to hardware, “A lot of your software could just shut down,”’ says Dott. The bug will also affect servers, Which run networks of computers, printers or in- ternet access, If you’re worried about the bug, Dolt suggests start- ing by figuring out what kind of software and motherboard you have, Most major computer companies have web sites Set up to tell people whether their equipment is subject to ihe bug and to help them ‘deal with the problem. If you still can’t find an answer, Dolt suggests taking your computer to a tech- nician. But he suggests not waiting any longer. “People who can solve the problem are going to be on short demand,’’ he says.
