Dear’ Sir: a4 Canada’s federal government has a reputation for squandcring money, but few programs can match the horrendous waste of taxpayer's dol-_ lars that occurs ‘in the name of official bilingualism. To operate,a government. in two official lan- guages, that is, to produce bilingual capabilities , in all government offices coast to coast requires the expenditure: of huge sums of | money. Since its inception in'1969, bilingualism has increased out national debt by over $55" billion, and is cur- rently costing us over $4 billion per year. ; To add further Insult, the program has failed in both offi ficial | tanguages. Legislation has proven to be powerless in the face _of demographic forces; it is the language of the marketplace, the street and the schoolyard Which. determines what tongue people will speak, For 26 years, Canadians have been forced to live a'lic, a lic which begs us to believe that we are B bilingual country. The truth of the matter is that Canada is an English speaking country, = with a bilingual region. Until something. affects | you. personally, you don’t see the. inherent flaws of Our system. My own experience has - brought home tome the -eonsequences of today’ 8 } permis- siveness, Recently my husband left me for my best friend. Communication in our relationship was not as intense as. what it. was at the beginning. ofa relationship, but I as- sumed that if the marriage was at. tisk, I'd be the first to know... So I was shocked and devastated when he anounced he was leaving. This affected the dives, of myself and my chil- dren. Past geneiations saw ‘the devastating effects of societal pressiires to ‘‘stay together for the children’’ and sought to {ree themselves from the prisons of loveless marriages. They began the fight, and my generation continued it, to atone for this by allowing, the pendulum to swing i io the. op- posite direction: . It seems it was easier for my husband to start a new rela- tionship, than to. put an effort into. re-energizing what we had together. The only reason this was an easier solution is because today’s society keels it should not take sides or as- sign blame, ~ : While I too would not want. to stay in a terminally ill marriage, I believe that if there was.not an easily acces- sible alternative, our story. would have tumed out differ- ently, How many of oir parents/grandparents talk of their few “‘rough’?. years. but stuck it out because they had no other - altemative and now are. happy. and satisfied with their iss? salu scale, ‘this attitude spawned the recent CHICKEN WINGS Honey Garlic of Cajun. Dog comments enrage writer Dear Sir: ~~ I couldn't believe my eyes when I read Councillor Graydon’s insensitive comments reported in the Nov. 8 edition of The Terrace Standard under the heading “Dog Plan Hit”. Councillor David Hull was ‘right on his effort to relocate 4 unwanted pets to areas where good homes are available. If * more Terrace pet owners were responsible and had their pets spayed or neutered or there was enough public support to re-establish the local SPCA branch, such animal teloca- tion’s would be unnecessary.
