Terrace Review — Wednesday, September 24, 1986 7 Former Caledonia runner plans for Hawaii triathlon When Gary Moen lived in Terrace, he com- peted in all available sports. He was excellent in some, average in others, but always strove to improve on what he considered challenges to his physical abilities. Since moving to Kamloops where he is at- tending Cariboo College, the former Caledonia High School track star has finally found the sport on which he can test his prowess — the triathlon. _ The dedicated Moen entered three of these run-swim-cycle events this summer and came through with great times in each one. In June, Gary went up against some of the best Ironman athletes in the country at Penticton. It was a 40-kilometer bike ride, 15-kilometer run and two-kilometer swim. Out of 370 compet- itors, Gary placed 19th in a time of one hour, 59 minutes, 14 seconds. Next it was the Vernon Triathlon where he had a slower time but managed to place eighth out of 200 athletes. Gary posted a time of two hours, 16 minutes, 42 seconds. Again it was 40 for the bike and two for the swim. However, the run J was only 10 kilometers. His final summer ef- fort came at the Kelowna Apple Triathlon where Gary grabbed 27th place § out of 525 athletes. In § this 40 bike, 15 run and [ two swim effort, Gary | had a time of two hours, § 37 minutes, 19 seconds. Moen gained his inter- J est in triathlon when one was held a few years ago # in Terrace. He also had | been an ardent com-f petitor in the various § Skeena Valley Runner’s § BUCKLE UPI Seat belts save lives. Club events during his time in Terrace, where Gary was born and lived until recently. He resumed interest in Ironman competitions last summer when he took part in the Kelowna event for the first time. Against 375 competitors, Gary placed 40th. His time was a relatively slow two hours, $1 minutes, 42 seconds. He has, of course, shown fast’ im-. provement on these numbers this summer. Although Moen’s im- mediate plans aren’t known, he said he'll be looking forward to. the world famous Hawaiian triathion in the near future.
