. by Greg Middleton We all hear about cases where passersby saw but ignored the plight of someone who was being beaten up or,robbed, but do you wonder’ ‘what you would do if it was up to you. . Queyras and her son, Guy, saw what they felt was a case of brutality True, they couldn't do the wisest thing right off the bat, call the police, because the incident involved two police: of- ficers and the man the officers were trying to arrest, They did, however, with the help of a Daily Herald staff member, report the in- cident to senior RCMP officers here. What they said they was saw two policemen putting a larger, native Terrace ' resident’ Ella. . and stood up to the test. A CASE OF BR U TALI ry? was not resisting. They saw a taxicab standing nearby and the woman cam driver standing there. Mrs. Queyras, who has some experience ‘in the cab business, ac- curalely summed up the situation. as a_ typical . dispute where a patron can't or won't pay a bill and the police are called. What upset the womarr and her son was the fact that the pollceman repeatedly slammed: the docr on the man's leg as he tried to get out of the police car. Mrs. Queyras told botht he Herald and two senior RCMP officers here, Sgt. * Roy Leblond and Staff - Sgt. Dick Latta, that the policemen put the man into the car but he stuck his leg out. He had been gesturing as though he wanted to go elsewhere - but wasn't putting up a struggle, she said. Mrs. for her to not just drive by. Shestated she saw the policeman slam the door on the man’s leg again, and she yelled over to him, “Hey, what are you doing? Do you want to break the man’s leg." According to Mrs. Queyras, and all this is “verified by her son, the jaca told her to © driying as she was btodking traffic, Then she says, the policeman slammed the door on the man’s leg a third time. . The RCMP do not dispute that the incident - happened. The two senior RCMF officers . were’ willing to talk with the Queyras’ in the presence of a Herald staffer, They sald they had checked the man who had indeed been arrested after he refused to pay 4 cab fare, They conceded that he had a one-inch-square. piece of etn missing from one Latta stated ‘the man’s . leg wasn't broken and that there were no cuts or - formation bruising. “Leblond read. out the man’s arrest record which included charges of impaired driving and criminal negligence causing death. Tt also contained in- about suspected breaking and entering but nat assaulting a polic officer, something Leblond said he though it would have shown. He said the man was currently passed out in cells. Both said they had talked to the mem- bers who arrested the fellow. Latta said he asked the two arresting officers about the incident and their version was thay as they had tried to close the - door of the car,-the man: put his foot out. Mrs. Queyras countered that with a firm statement saylng she saw the officer slam the door and that he . was smiling at the time. Both Latta and Leblond said they doubted the “man would have been smiling. She just didn’t think it right. “Policeman don't enjoy picking up drunken In- dians,” Latta said, He went on to explain to : the Queyraa’ that there is always an element of risk involved in arresiing someone and that the policemen have a right to use reasonable force and protect themselves. Mrs. Queyras agreed with that but commented that she didn’tsee slamming a car door on a man’s'leg as protecting anyone. The outcome of the incident is that no - charges are going to be laid = =—s_ against the policemen. Even Mrs. Queyras said she didn't really want that, Latta said he would speak again to the members invalved. That satisfied her. She later said to the Herald that she never really thought that anything would be resolved, she just didn’t think what she had seen was right and she didn’t want to just pass it by, even though it Probably happens all the .time. ; Franz -Colet, man into a police car.
