— Construction workers hit lines ; By ALEX HAMILTON TWO MORE natural gas leaks, evacuations and in- vesligatious Were underway Thursday, after two ex- cavators: working on sepa- ‘rate’ city projects severed gas lines on Sparks Street and Kalum Street, A worker for Spring Creck Aggregates. Ltd hit a two- inch walural gas mainline with his backhoe on Sparks Street near Munthe Avenue at approximately 10:30 a.m. This was about an hour after another gas Icak from a 1.25 inch pipe was reported at about’ 9 am. on Kalum Street. Pacific Northern Gas Ron Vanderlee (PNG) had both gas lines” shut off by 11:15 p.m. According to PNG’s west- er regional manager, Ron Vanderlee, the ratio of gas fo . air never reached dangerous Icvels at either site, ; The ratio didn’t go above 1.5 per cent, and in order for gas to ignite, the air to gas ralio would have to be five to 15 per cent. “Because it was a nice warm day, the gas went straight up and dissipated into the atmosphere right away,’ he said. According city director of engineering Stew Christensen, three gas leaks in one month is very un- usual, “What strikes me is that two happened on one day,”’ said Christensen. Both contractors had called BCICALL, which is a toll-free service that does a free line location check for companies to let them know what pipelines are buried below digging sites. Somehow the lines that a PNG employee drew on the ground marking where the lines were, weren't followed correctly. “Nothing was done wrong in Pacific Northern Gas drawing the lines,’’ said Vanderlee. ‘“Where we drew the lines was correct.’’ Currently, PNG and the Workman’s Compensation Board are looking into the investigation. “We haven't got to the bottom of what’s happening here,” said Vanderlee. Because there have been three gas leaks caused by excavators in the past month, Vanderlee said he wants to slart an education program for contraclors to teach them how to dig prop- erly alongside lines, a5 Go Go Go ao a5 Go Ga 65 a5 Third World Eyecare is traveling to Zimbabwe in October to provide free eyecare and eye- glasses to those less fortunate than our- selves.
