A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 22, 1996 Nursing cuts to save | hospital $472,000 MILLS MEMORIAL Has- pital expects to save more than $470,000 by cutting the equivalent of 10 and half nursing jobs. And nearly nine of the full time equivalent cuts will af- fect its licensed practical nurses, indicates informa- tion given by hospital man- agement to its unions, Just over 15 full time equivalent job cuts. will be born by the hospital’s regis- fered nursing contingent, All told more than 20 people will lose their jobs as a result of the plan. The cults are part of a plan by Mills to balance its budget after years of succes- sive budget freezes from the provincial government. — They are also ticd in with a plan by Mills to renovate its main medical services floor by bringing closer to- gether its various wards. That, says Mills, will in- crease efficiencies and al- low it to operate with fewer people. It'll do so by cutting Hi- censed practical nursing positions and replacing them with registered nurses who will also be affected. The cuts reach down to the hospital’s emergency ward where licensed practi- cal nurses will Jose their jobs and be replaced by those registered nurses out of work as part of the changes on the main medi- cal services floor, But the Hospital Employ- ees’ Union (HEU) which represents the licensed prac- tical nurses who will lose the most due to the cuts op- poses the plan. Union spokesman Elaine Pigeau says it doesn't make any sense to replace li- censed practical nurses with Tegistered nurses who cam more money. “Everywhere else — at VGH (Vancouver General Hospital), in Prince George -and on Vancouver, Island,the........,.. trend is to hire LPNs (li- censed practical nurses),’” said Pigeau. She noted that an LPN full time equivalent position, in- cluding benefits, costs $40,243 a year compared to $58,017 for a registered nurse. Head nurses make $68,601 a year while a team leader makes $65,692 a «When you — can't breathe, nothing else matters’ BRITISET COLUMBIA LUNG ASSOCIATION 731-LUNG or 1-800-665-LUNG /country TREASURES, SMITHERS - Thank you to all who visited our display in Skeena Mall. The propased cuts are being presented to unions this month by Mills man- agers who say they're will- ing to listen to alternatives. This places the HEU and the other health care unions in a tricky position as they don’t want to be viewed as compeling among them- selves for jobs, said Pigeau. The HEU has so far declined to take part in dis- cussions which will lead to job losses of its members, kakkkk In the meantime the chair . two-year of the Terrace Regional Health Care Society which govems Mills says its too. early to figure out the im- pact of a proposed contract setlement between health care employers and their workers. Olga Power said = the Health Employers’ Associa- tion is working on the im- plications of a proposed contract. which will freeze wages this year and provide for a onc per cenl increase next year, ‘The. proposed contract would also give employees job protection for 12 months once their employer decides to shift work responsibilities. These recommendations come: from veteran labour negotiator Vince Ready who was brought in the end of April after employers and unions failed to teach an agreement among them- selves. Nothing is expected to happen until after the provincial election.
