School District 98 is distributing 65 copies of the revised
policy manual this fall. Besides the usual copy to every
school principal, an extra copy will be placed on file in
every school library, with the exception of the Jack Cook
School, The extra copy will be for reference by parents and
Parent groups.

This printing of 65 copies signals an achievement for
parent groups. Three years ago even I didn’t know about
the existence of a policy manual, When I first heard about
it, I didn’t know the manual was a loose leaf binder; I

learned first hand the importance of being familiar with the
district's policies as the first line of defence whenever they -

engagein a dispute with the school board over any issue, be .

school discipline problem, or how a hoard meeting should ,

be conducted.

Knowing ‘the policies and having the anual handy for

_ quick réference is vital toa trustee, also. Some of the'test
advice I've had came froma fellow trustee from a neigh-

boring school district. “Keep the policy manual in front of -

you onthe board table,” he advised, “and remind: the

trustees of their. own policies when' they forget or Ignore -

then.” So far I’ve had one occasion to follow his advice,
