Checklist for Students
The following checklist will help the child determine for
himself whether he has done a good job.

+ My handwriting is legible.

¢ Ichecked my calculations twice.

+ Each of my sentences starts with a capital letter.

+ Each sentence ends with a period.

+ I followed the order on the pyramid.

+ I worked neatly.
+] put away my materials.

Flash Cards to the Rescue

Flash cards are extremely helpful for learning vocabulary,
spelling, math tables, etc. Write a word or problem on a
small coloured card and let the child study each card before
asking her to spell from memory or answer a simple math
question. After the child answers, show her the card. This
visual aid helps provide a mental picture of the answer and
helps the student store it in her memory.

Settling Parent/Teacher Differences

Despite best intentions, a disagreement may arise between
you and the teacher. Such differences are often minor and
can be resolved quickly. Here are a few suggestions that
might help:

“* Keep a cool head and avoid unnecessary anger
or tension, especially if your child is directly
involved.

“+ Avoid taking your child’s side too quickly.
Reassure him that you will do everything
necessary to understand the situation fully.

“+ Take time to communicate with the teacher.
“* At all costs, avoid showing disrespect
toward the teacher, in either words or
gestures
“+ Contact the school principal if the problem
persists or if you feel that it cannot be
resolved between you and the teacher.
Explain the situation to the principal and
describe what has been done to try to find a
solution.
