The cement block George Little Mémorial Park washroom will be under construc- tion soon. It will be built by “Wayne Watson Construction of Prince George at a cost of $42,280. Two city aldermen, Ruth Hallock and Mo Takhar, however, are no longer convinced ‘the park wash- room is a good idea. Ruth Hallock made the following motion: "That we do not accept any of these proposals at this time." Hallock explained she was having second thoughts on the project and as a result walked and drove the park area several times in the previous week. "I think we're inviting disas- ter," she told her fellow aldermen. Hallock explained that in the past week she had noted several small children playing in the park and at the same time on at least one - occasion a couple of inebriated adults wandering in the park. And, according to Hallock, an unsuper- vised, enclosed building available _|.. to “small-children and old drunks is inviting the possibility of child molestation". She added, "I wouldn’t want that on my con- science... I would like to look at it one more time and see if we can come up with an alternate plan." Alderman Danny Sheridan dis- agreed. He said children have been - | molested in the public library and swimming pool in the past, and while that’s asad comment on the state of society it’s not a good reason to scrap the’ project. Sheri- dan pointed out the washrooms would only be unlocked during the day and on special occasions. "It’s been a budget item for two years. It’s been well publicized. Let’s get on with construction and get it done.quickly," he argued. _ — Continued on page A8 WINNER'S CIRCLE.
