A movie with a zero rating we consider artistically inept, some- times morally decadent and usually created only to make money. Generally, you will not see such a film, but we feel that if there is one like this, it is our duty to warn you. Comment: Our stats on the rating and times are not completely ac- curate for Twentieth- Century Fox Video does not supply these facts on their video cassettes, to the best of our knowledge. Minori- ties, and those requiring more care and services are often better served by community-based organ- izations and by people who have the will and ‘concern to go the extra mile for others less for- tunate in their communi- ties, When does the foundation bow out of programs and services? A: If a problem be- comes widespread or af- fects many people, and the will of the majority of voters indicates that government assistance is necessary, governments will assume new respon- sibilities. In the history of this country, it was often the community- based private and volun- tary organizations which identified community needs and found ways to meet those needs. Q: How much money must the Kinsmen Mothers’ March raise this year? A: Our target this year is $1,600,000. Demand for our services and pro- grams is increasing and so is the cost of pro- viding our assistance. The target is only the minimum we need to carry on the level of work we did last year. We could easily find ex- cellent uses for almost any amount of money raised above the target. High technology equip- ment for the disabled is very expensive — and very useful for many more disabled people than we can currently serve. Q: How much does the campaign cost to run? A: Campaign expenses are increasing like most other costs. Our *81-"82 fiscal year expenditures totalled 18.2 percent — a three percent increase over the previous year. Q: Does the campaign serve any other func- tions? A: Yes — the door-to- door campaign often finds new people who can be helped by the foundation. It also in- creases people’s knowl- edge about disabilities and how they can be alleviated. Q: How can I help? A: You can donate to the Kinsmen Mothers’ Marcher who calls at your door between Jan. 25 and Feb, 4, buy Kin- Win Lottery tickets, or donate directly to the Foundation at any time. Terrace Review — Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1986 19 Patrick McIntyre viewpoint The Mechanic is a portrait of an assassin. Arthur Bishop (Charles Bronson) plays a man with the same emotion- al state as a tomb- stone. He's a_ loner who’s resorted to drugs and the occasional hooker to maintain an emotional equalibrium. And yes, he kills people for a living, and does it well. Sure, there was sub- plot between the stu- dent (Jan-Michael Vin- cent) and Bishop, but what really made this movie tick was Bron- son’s character. His code of killing, his per- sonal life, and his sur- render towards the cer- tain unwritten laws of his profession. . Charles Bronson may. not be a great actor, but his portrait seemed real and had me hooked from beginning to end. I give this movie a high rating for this reason, although it could have been a better film if the entire student subplot was dropped, no matter what point it made. The movie attempts to reveal the life that a professional assassin could live. In this por- trait, we see Arthur Bishop (Charles Bron- son) who is an accom- plished assassin, under the employment of ‘‘the Organization”, which happens to be some kind of above-the-law outfit that deals death to any competitor, or employee, who _ be- comes an obstacle to progress. Bronson’s character relies on silence, and actions to display the feelings that he is sup- posed to have towards any particular incident. In fact, this character is very commendable in that he readily develops ' throughout the entire film and becomes inter- esting enough to keep the film going. Unfortunately, the entrance of Jan-Mi- chael Vincent as Steve McKenna begins to veer the film away from its original goal. It seems that the pupil/teacher subplot was added for the sake of action. But it did bring another view of Bronson’s char- acter into being. . The image of Arthur Bishop might include: action before words, doing things the proper way before rushing, and even caution before eagerness. But, more likely he appears dis- turbed by the sin that is related to his profes- sion. He even has pic- tures depicting scenes of ‘‘hell’? on an angled wall within his com fort- able home. Arthur even appears to welcome his death at the end of the film. I was pleased with this movie and its char- acterization of the as- sassin, although one must consider the na- ture of this movie be- fore viewing, as the video most definitely, is not just the average fiim.
