WOU ATOLAIL DL Us AL BL of South African goods Claude Jodoin, president of the Canadian Labor Congress, has called on the Canadian trade union movement to back the re- cent United Nations appeal for a boycott against goods from South Africa. In a.-é state- ment issued in connection with Human Rights Day, which is celebrated by the UN on Dec. 10, Jodoin con- demned the JODOIN violation of hu- man rights by the Republic of South Africa. “. . South Africa,”’ he said, “has refused to change its laws and practice of racial persecu- tion and apartheid and has. pro- claimed a way of life for its in- habitants which in its total wicked- ness and brutality can only be compared to the policies of Hit- ler Germany.” He referred to the recent sabo- tage laws which made protests against apartheid punishable by death and stated: ‘In brief, apar- theid means the political, social and economic domination of nearly 12 milion non-whites by three million whites.” = Meanwhile, a number of Afro- Asian nations are working on a General Assembly resolution de- manding an immediate embargo on aid to Portugal. The neutralists’ measure was aimed at the supply of arms to Portugal by its NATO allies for use against African liberation struggles, particularly in its col- only of Angola. The U.S., in an attempt to head off this move, was reported to be considering introduction of a resolution which would call for dispatch of a single UN com- missioner to probe conditions in Angola. But the Afro-Asians are opposed to this sidestepping of the issue and are virtually cer- tain to defeat it in the General Assembly. Informed sources have __indi- cated that the proposed measure, in addition to the embargo, would also press for Security Council sanctions against the regime of Portugese dictator Salazar. It sounds for all the world like an extract from Wm. Rathie’s election program and leaves little doubt as to the real intention of the Archbisho! remarks. “However, the seriousness of the Archbishop’s partisan inter vention in Vancouver civic pol tics lies in the introduction of 7 ligious convictions and prejudic® — into municipal affairs, plus open call for illegalizing the Com munist Party.” Pointing out that there is ‘no group in Vancouver which has Ss? consistently ‘represented th® needs of Vancouver citizens more faithfully than has the Commul ist Party,’ the statement con cludes: “Archbishop Duke makes no contribution either to civic byes tics, or the Catholic commun!" by such ill-conceived remarks: GLOBE @ USSR Winnipeg 4, Man.
