-~ 3—-Mr. RA. Freeman September 17, 1973 9. Physicions determine patterns of hospite] utilization so physician distribution is en important consideration. Regarding obstetrical patients, the caseload is handled by General Practitioners and Obstetricians. General Practitioners are distributed as follows: Coquitlem 31 Port Coquitlan 13 Port Moody h ; Toco L New Westminster 53 There are only four specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the whole south-east area and these are located in New Westminster. With 68 of the 102 general and special physicians concerned with handling obstetrical cases located in Coauitlam end New Westminster, and consider- ing the reasonable distaices and travel times for the majority of residents to Royal Columbian Hospital, the great majority of cases should be. very well served for general obstetrics as well as high risk cases which could not be treated in the proposed Coquitlam Hospital in any event. 10, Over a period of time it can be expected that the population will increase, particularly to the east. Neither the report nor the Advisory Committee have ever indicated that obstetrical facilities at Coquitlam Hospital would never be a reality, but rather that these would be added in a second stage of development. From a regional p2rspective, the Advisory Committee is confident that the present proposals for development provide "best value't for the Limited funds available. You may be assured that the Coquittam Hospital will. continue to develop to meet the areas' needs, In the meantime, we are anxious to see development of the first stage as quickly as possible and stand ready to assist the Hospital Society in any way. Yours very truly, MAL Hoi. Purdy Ph.D. Chairman — Hospital Advisory Committee.
