The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 5, 1996 - A7 a te aoe at Social Credit rides again Dear Sir: Well it is over, but before son three in the next federal Arthur David S eleclion as the NDP sweeps imat ne CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Kitimat, B.C, my coms stop aching and all the - dust settles, several items need addressing and correcting, The 60 to 40 per cent solu- tion once again holds true, and right of centre voters, and their financial backers with more money than sense, better not forget as they are prone to do. Grace McCarthy and her new found Liberal friends got walloped, as they will again and again until they get the simple message, ‘That when you mun a_ federal political party flag up the B.C. political flagpole, only half of the free enterprise vote will salute, and the other half will have high blood pressure from anger, and rightly so,”’ The unfortunate fact is that had the Liberals buried their silly pride and come home to Social Credit most Reformers would have, too. The extremists would dis- solve into a rump. I guess Mr. Rick Wozney would rather blame Reform than accept the simple fact that Blues will not salute reds, and Reds will not salute Blues. Mr. Helmut Giesbrecht and the NDP are quite right when he says ‘They will take it any way they can” and I salule the fact that they make no such mistake The Mail Bag of dividing the 40 per cent support they enjoy, Fifty per cent of the right of centre vale would nol vote for a Liberal though their policies came from Jesus Christ Himself and no Liberal for Reform or Conservative vice versa, By Mr. Wozney blaming Reform for his demise he solidifies this open hatred the Biues have for the Reds and the Reds have for the Blues, This will carry over to the federal election, and with a half-assed candidate the NDP will take Skeena. Put simply then, what is Social Credit? When you take nitric acid and mix it with glycerin you get @ very unstable ex- plosive mixture ¢alled nitro- glycerin. One shake and you can blow yourself and whatever building you are in to kingdom come, If you mix the nitric acid into “kieselguhr’? or in English ‘'Fullers Earth’’ then add the glycerin you get a very stable product called TNT which needs a blasting cap to set it off, Social Credit is the Fullers Earth of the political ex- plosive business. It absorbs the Blucs and Reds in a Stable but damnable ex- plosive force as the NDP well know. It kept them in the political wilderness for 42 of the past 50 years, The financial backers of Reform and Liberals must lick their wounds over the sea of red ink their two parties cost them to secure a back to back NDP govern- ment. The sad fact is that for half the cost Social credit would have done the job. Better still, Liberals and Reform would be sharing power right now and form- ing the government. Winning the popular vote is sad consolation and a false premise upon which to formulate future strategy if we sincerely wish to defeat the NDP. We in Social credit have already done our homework. As you wipe your teary eyes, it is only wishful thinking of Liberals think the Reform/Conservative vote will just disappear to make the Liberal delusion of grandeur ever become more than just that, This was Poli Sci 101, les- son one, Lesson two will come in November, and les- Spending limit valid Dear Sir: You have decided to chal- lenge the new provisions of the B.C. Elections Act limit- ing third part spending on- partisan election advertising to $5,000 during an clection. Your challenge has con- sisted of breaking the law and then foudly asserting thai fact in order to test both legal and public opinion, Doubtless it is the job of a free press to question the law when you see it to be blatantly unfair or dangerous to our civil liberties. This law is neither. It en- hances the fairness of the electoral process in British Columbia by ensuring that all points of view can be heard more or less clearly and equally. There are many examples of abridgment of free speech in Canada, Try mentioning ‘bomb’ in an airport line-up, for example, or bringing pomography into a school classroom, This kind of limitation to free expression . fails to excite your indigna- lion. Consequently the of- fence you have taken to the new election rules is net simply one of principle, The new election mules do not forbid election advertis- ing of any particular kind by any third party; they merely control the quantity. In any formal debate both partics are granted equal time in which to make their case, Rules of debate are scrupulously applied ta ensure that the judging audience has an opportunity to hear both sides of the is- Sue equally, Kt would be absurd to al- low one party to arpue its case for 20 minutes, the sec- ond party to reply only for ten and then to end the debate expecting an objec- tive and impartial judgment from the audience. Yet that is the principle of election debate you are (wit- tingly = or unwittingly) defending by your action, The corporate sector has consistently and fairly suc- cessfully influenced the out- come of electoral decisions in Canada by weighing in with millions of dollars in third party advertising. Corporate Canada is fond of quoting the saw about playing “‘on a level playing field.’* They can always be counted on to do so as long as they can field more, bet- ter equipped players and pay flashier, sexier cheerleaders. If the goal of a democracy is to enable people to vote in their self-interest based on knowledge of the issues pro- vided by relatively equal ac- cess to the various parties’ advertising, then this new legislation is probably some of the most valuable the NDP has passed in its recent tenure in government, Al Lehmann, ‘Terrace, B.C. B.C. federally. As a lawyer Mr. Wozney should understand the in- violable laws of political na- ture. (Editor's note: Mr, Serry was the Social Credit candi- date in the May 28 provin- cial election.)
