The review is designed to make management agencies more responsive to changing public needs and will in- clude both a six-month consultant study and the establishment of an outside advisory group to provide public input. “The role of the Fish and Wildlife Branch has changed a great deal in recent years,’ said Mc- Carthy. “It is no longer just an agency to set hunting and fishing seasons and enforce regulations, but rather plays a significant role in integrated resources management. Al the same time, public interest in wildlife-based recreation is changing and increasing. We want to ensure that all these changes are reflected in our management policy.” Datsun is the gas mileage winner again in 1976. E.P.A. tests prove it! Arctic mining controls stop pollution Guidelines that could bring about an 80 percent reduction in air pollution from emissions of par- ticulate matter by mining operations in the Aretic were announced recently by Acting Environment Minister Romeo LeBlanc. The guidelines limit the emission of particulates to 04 of a gram per normal cubic meter of exhaust gases. Equipment is available to achieve that level. Sulphur dioxide emission from combustion of fuel oil used in drying ore con- centrates is limited to 1.1 grams per 1000 kilocalories of heat produced. That limit is nat being exceeded now, but the guidelines provides protection should fuel oil with high sulphur content be considered in the future. “The Arctic environment is particularly fragile, and Environment Canada is issuing these guidelines because it is important to avoid the serious impact that can result from un- controlled emissions from mining aperations,’’ Mr. LeBlanc stated. “The Territorial gavern- ments have agreed in principle to adopt these guidelines as minimum Standards for mining plants within their jurisdiction,” noted the Minister.
