More rain and more clouds predicted in years ahead GLOBAL warming will not transform the cool, wet B.C. north coast into a tro- pical paradise, a new re- port released by the pro- vincial government indi- cates. ‘We won't feel any more summer heat and may have to gel used to even more cloud and rain, says Andicators. of Climate Change for British Coilum- bia. - The document charts climate changes in B.C, over the past century and predicts future trends and their effects. Average temperatures tose 0.6 degrees in the 20th century on the B.C, coast. It was even more marked in the far north, where an increase of 1.7 degrees was measured - about three times the glo- bal average. Broken down by season, _it found average winter temperatures in the coast and: mountains region rose by 1.4 degrees in the last century and average spring temperatures rose 0.8 de- prees. But there was no mea- sured change in summer or fall temperatures. Also, the report indi- cates most of the change is the result of warmer overnight mininum tem- peratures, rather than an increase in daily max- imums. Here on the coast, that A dull May TERRACE RECORDED its fourth dullest May since 1974, indicate re- cords kept by Environment Canada. Only 156.8 hours of sun- shine was put on the books at the airport, the location of the federal agency’s in- struments, said Bill Miller, who works for En- vironment Canada in Whitehorse. “The warmest day of the. month was the 19th and the coldest tempera- ture was recorded on the 7th,” he said. “The 7th was also the last day frost was seen at the airport. The probability of a spring frost on May 6 is 50-50 so there were no surprises there.” It was also slightly col- der through the month with a mean temperature of 9,1 degrees, .8 degrees below normal for the month. That maximum tem- perature on May 19 at 21 degrees was far less than the record maximum of 34.6 degrees set for May in 1983. - And the minimum tem- perature of -1.5 degrees on .May 7 was just above the record -2.2 degrees set for ‘a May day in 1971. ' Total rainfall for May was 61.7mm, which was above normal but far less — than. the 105.5mm which feil in May of 1992. All told, British Colum- bia experienced below normal temperatures for what is normal for May, _said Miller. Along Hwyl6, only Smithers and Terrace showed above normal rain- fall for the month, sald Miller. “Cold temperatures and rain. go together in the - spring at least in Smithers where there was 186 per -cent of normal precipita- tion for the month with nearly 10cm of the white stuff falling,” he added. The Environment Cana- da official said a series of weak highs and lows pass- ing through the area con- tributed 'to the dull weath- ef. For the rest of June, Miller is predicting near ‘normal temperatures, ‘He expects the same for the rest of the summer yet warns there will be above ‘normal rainfall. ” “Ht looks like that tan Is-° going to be hard to come ~*s by this year,” Miller said, worked out to a 0.9 degree average increase in over- night minimums over the past century, Further inland that change is even more dra- matic, with overnight minimums tising from 1.4 degrees in the southern in- terior to 2.1 degrees i in the far north. “The overall. pattern suggests that most regions of .BC are warming be- cause night-time minimum temperatures are increas- ing, not because day-time maximum temperatures are increasing,” the report says. “One could say that BC has actually become ‘less cald’ rather than ‘hotter.”” paeaiehiek we: The reason may be in- creased cloud cover over coastal B.C. the report says, adding it may even cause a cooling trend for summer temperatures. The report says that may lead to longer frost- free growitig seasons and buildings may cool off less at night. “Higher night-time minimum temperatures in fall, winter, and ‘spring may enhance the prowing conditions for both valu- able and pest plant and in- sect species,” the report says. Precipitation on the B.C. coast increased two per cent per decade over “the past 70 years, it said. y the. best. value wine i ie arvice. There may be more water to repenish aquifers and reservoirs, but also a greater threat of flooding and landslides, the report said. Greater erosion. may hurt salmon habitat. ’ Precipitation is increas- ing because warmer air can carry more water. The report predicts a continued trend towards more rain and less snow in winters. “Relatively wet years will almost certainly in- crease in frequency,” it said, The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 12, 2002 - A?
