2 Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 23, 1990 Dump fires: wed, x local officials The only fire reported in the past week by the Terrace Fire Depart-. ment occured at the Terrace dump. According to a Public Works spokesman, a pile of several large tires was set ablaze by an unknown arsonist just before noon Saturday. Terrace fire chief Cliff Best says two pumper trucks and a bulldozer were required to extin- guish the fire. _ The city’s Public Works director of. operations, John Colongard, says there has been a significant drop in the number of illegally set fires at the Terrace landfill since operating hours and supervisory changes have been implemented — this is the first in about two months — but that dump fires are still a concern. They cost money, present a hazard to the surrounding bush and pollute the environoment. But Colongard also points out that unauthorized fires are not specifically a Terrace problem. He says that last Saturday a fire was also set at the Usk din ‘which caused forestry officials some concem and Thornhill has an ongoing problem as well. According to Kitimat-Stikine Regional District administrator Bob Marcellin, though, the fre- quency of unauthorized fires at the Thornhill dump has also been Significantly reduced... at a cost to Thornhill taxpayers. He says that annual summer restrictions have been implemented earlier this year than in previous years, and while there is some supervision a full- time supervisory position is under consideration. — He says that Thornhill dump operating hours are now & a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and these hours may be in effect for an extended period of time this year. Marcellin says there is still the "occassional" illegal fire at the dump, however, and regardless of the extent of the preventative measures taken they will never eliminate them all. Furniture franchise to build In case you’re wondering what happened to that United Buy and Sell furniture franchise we reported on a few months ago, it hasn’t disappeared. United Buy and Sell spokesmen David Matthews says that local developer Epp. Talstra has signed a contract which will see the United Buy and Sell _.location open for business at Keith and the Sande Overpass by Aug. 1. - Matthews says a franchise dealer hasn’t been named yet, several have been interviewed and there are a few more to go, but gives two reasons for this. First, they want to make sure they get the “tight person", and second the Terrace store is at the head of their priority list. He explains that the growing B.C. company has opened six new stores in as many weeks, located in Duncan, Campbell River, Salmon Arm and three Washington cities. Once these six stores are up and running, he says, the Terrace store will once again head their list of priorities. Matthews said in an interview earlier this year that the Terrace store will serve the north- west comer of the province and promises the best furniture prices in the area. Accidents — continued from page 1» for local conditions. And Monaghan adds that chances of being involved in an accident are greater in the Terrace area than in Kitimat. He says he has investi- gated two traffic deaths this year and both were in the Terrace area. In the Kitimat area, on the other hand, he says the last traffic fatal- ity he investigated was in Kemano in May 1989, and the one before that involved a Swiss tourist who “died when he lost control of his rented four-wheel drive Bronco and struck a parked car near Kiti- mat. That was in September 1988. In the Terrace area, there have been six fatalites this year and Monaghan says the difference is in the through-highway traffic; Kiti- oO Cheque Name - o Money Order - Subscription Order Form | D 4 year — $24. 00. : Please send a subscription to Address - Phone —__—.-__ Postal Code... AMABLE, but this tone firefighter still looks overwhelmed by a smoke-belching blaze that was set by an arsonist Saturday at the Terrace landfill. A number of discarded heavy equipment tires were involved in the fire. Officials say the dump fires cost money, endanger surrounding forest and pollute the atmosphere but they will probably never be eliminated no matter how closely 1 the sites are regulated. -mat is on a "dead end". Monaghan agrees with Lynch on the primary causes of traffic deaths but also points out that a recent ICBC report indicates that more than 50 percent all traffic fatalities in B.C. are alcohol-related. And the per- centage may be even higher in the - north, adds Monaghan. Terrace Review .V8Q1M7 [ Look _ inthe month of What’s = MAY at the Cookin" ...
