By NICK LEES STAND OFF, Alta. (CP) — Prince Charles becomes Chief Mekaisto after a late- day pageant and religious ceremony Thursday al the Blood Reserve here, 96 miles south of Calgary. Mekaisto, which means red crow, was a renowned’ warrior and considered by the Bloods, a tribe in the Blackfoot Confederacy, to be the greatest chief. Wayne Wells, _ tribal administrator, told the Prince of Wales that Mekaisto was responsible for adapting the tribe to farming. Prince Charles, here for the Treaty 7 Centennial, was to be welcomed into. the Kainai (Blood) Chieftainship by fellow chiefs Many Spotted Horses (fermer Canadian -prime mimister John Diefenbaker), Running Antelope (former Governor- THE HERALD, Friday, duly 8, 1 7, PAGE # “MEKAISTO. HELPS TRIBE _ The chieftainship society is ‘intended to help the tribe, who have the largest Canadian reserve with 352,600 acres, almost half of whieh is under cultivation. The first member of the society, inducted in 1919, was the Duke of Windsor, Prince Charles’ great-uncle. A new chief is daubed it paint by a medicine man while sitting cross-legged on a bufialo robe. A headdress is placed on his head, a new name bestowed, and the pair, followed by all Kainai chiefs Sexual attack not provoked . OTTAWA (CP) — Women who are sexually assaulted are innocent victims and. don’t consciously or unconsciously provoke the attack, says a study by Toronto . psychologist Sheldon H. Geller, “It appears that the male: sex offender simply decides to assault the next female he conditions permitting,” says the Ontario government clinical psychologist. To test his theory, Geller studied the number of sexual offences against women who hitch-hiked during the 1974 Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) strike which shut down all - ublic transportation there or 23 days. Using police statistics, he compared the assault rate for similar 23-day periods before and after the strike. -To make sure that seasonal factors such as vacations, weather or unemployment didn’t affect the rate of sexual attack, ’ Geller also compared police statistics for the three same 23-day periods in 1973. INNOCENT VICTIMS Geller said if women are innocent victims, and not “temptresses”’ then ‘‘the number of sexual offences ‘ against hitchhikers would increase during the TTC strike period, while the total mumber of sexual assaults on females would remain | unchanged, since the male offender would merely alter -his method of contacting his victim to the more readily. accessible female hitch- hiker.” - ; ; The Toronto psychologist, who also teaches at Seneca College, found the number ‘of sexual offences against ‘women during the strike— rape, attempted rape and = serpe~ 4 PRUDE indecent assault—rose nine times, while.the total num-.. ber of sexual offences remained the same during the time periods studied in 1973 and 1974. : “It would appear that there is arelatively constant number of males in Metropolitan Toronta who commit .sexual offences against adult females,’’ he writes in a recent issue of the federal health departmént. magazine Canada's Mental Health. ~ CAN BE REDUCED Geller said as a result of his study he feels. sexual offences against women can be reduced if women “don’t hiteh-hike or engage in other activities that may place them in isolated situations with unfamiliar men.” The Toronto psychologist says studies indicate there are four stages in sexual offences, and a woman who realizes this can better protect herself. * He said in the first stage sex offenders seek out women who are vulnerable to attack, women who are cn isolated places where there is little chance of. interruption, and women ‘should avoid these areas. “Second, the sex offender then tests the woman to determine if she can be in- timidated,'’’ Geller says. “The woman’s first line of defence is not to allow herself to be intimidated or to express fear.” - He said the third stage in rape involves the sex offender telling his victim that he will kill her if she fails to co-operate and that he will not harm her if she does. If the woman is in- timidated and co-operates: then the fourth and final stage of rape—the sexual transaction “635-6142, 4646 LAKELSE AVE. 635-6142 CLOSE TO SCHOOLS Older style 4 baxircom tome with wall fo wall carpeting, ful! basement with | bedroom, bathroom and rumpus room.
