The- Freedom Riders are
groups of black and white
people who are travelling in
the Deep South in an attempt
to break up the colour bar in
waiting rooms and buses.

The action of the Freedom
Riders has won overwhelming
support among peoples all
over the world. It has served
to point up the bitter racist
policies existing in the United
States — “the land of the free
and the home of the brave,”
and has brought world-wide
criticism of U.S. racism.

Defying threats and acts of violence from southern racists,
America’s Freedom Riders announced in Montgomery, Alabama,
this week that they will go on to Jacksonville, Mississippi, to con-
\tinue their fight against segregation.

Martin Luther King, address-
ed the congregation in the
church. He told them respon-
sibility for the rioting in
Montgomery “must be placed |
at the doorstep of the Gover-|
nor.”

He charged that -Governor
Paterson’s actions and _  pro-
nouncements “created the at-
mosphere in which violence
could thrive.”

Ever since he came to power
seven. years ago, Governor
Paterson has tried to outlaw
the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored
People and he is reputed to
have -become Governor with
the support of the Ku Klux
Klan.

While the Negro. people
waited in the church for Dr.
King to arrive they sang

spirituals, one of which ran:

“And before I'll be a slave

“T’ll be buried in my grave

“And go home to my Lord
and be free.”

Dr.. King in his address de-
clared that. Alabama had
“sunk to a level of barbarity
like Hitler’s Germany.” As he
spoke a ‘Race hate” van spon-
sored by the American Nazi
Party toured the streets of
Montgomery without inter-
ference.

Although the U.S. Attorney-
General, Robert Kennedy, or-
dered Federal marshals into
the area this week, there are
strong indications that the
Kennedy administration is
closely tied with the racists in
the South through ‘commit-
ments made during the recent
elections.

Last week Georgia’s Gover-
nor Ernest Vandiver said that

who have betrayed the Amer-
ican Revolution.”

The announcement which came jointly from Washington
and Moscow said the meeting would give them “a timely
and convenient opportunity” for their first personal contact
and “a general exchange of views on the major issues which
affect the relationships between the two countries.”

U.S. officials disclosed that it was Premier Khrushchev
who during the first week of May revived inquiries for a
meeting with President Kennedy.

On Monday Kennedy told a group of Soviet editors in
Washington that he was looking forward “hopefully” to his
meeting with Khrushchev.
