14 Terrace Review — Wednesday, November 18, 1987 | Council opposes CBC move © An ‘announcement made by CBC that it plans to cut the CFPR Prince Rupert staff from: 14 to only two has brought a- rash of complaints from every corner of the Northwest, and Terrace council has decided to continue its protest with a- renewed effort. a, The city first wrote CBC president Pierre Juneau on Dec. 4, 1985, to voice council’s con- cern that budget cuts ‘‘may adversely affect the level of ser- vice’’. In the letter, Mayor Jack Talstra said that CFPR provided “excellent coverage of news events, as well as in-depth in- vestigative reporting for all of British Columbia’s Northwest region,’’ and pointed out that the Northwest was an area ‘‘which incorporates vast dis- tances and extreme geographic features, with CBC providing the single linking. perspective between all our communities’’. ' Talstra noted at the time that some programming previously produced in Prince Rupert was being supplied from Vancouver and that further budget reduc- tions of 10 to 15 percent would be totally unacceptable from ‘Terrace’s standpoint. Juneau replied to that letter on Feb. 6, 1986 and said, “‘Like you, we believe strongly that the local/regional component of our programming is-an essential part of the overall service provided Raffle winners — _ Letter To the Editor; Montessori Children’s House would like to thank all those who assisted, or attended the Hallowe'en, parties. City administrator Bill Smith stated, ‘While the economic loss to the city will be substan- tial, the erosion of service is ‘causing the most concern amongst council members.”’ He noted that residents in the: ‘‘Pacific Northwest’? do not have access to the same level of : communication facilities (radio and television) that residents in more populated areas of the pro- vince have and that the mandate - of CBC should “‘not be to serve the greatest population but to serve the population with the greatest need’’. oe continued on page 16 Aqguideto .
