Condition vs ‘hope’ FE inance Minister Walter Gordon’s proposal to return to ‘the provinces all federal corporation revenues garnered from taxes on privately-owned public utility corporations, has a sticky flaw in it. Mr. Gordon “hopes” that the provinces in turn will remit these corporation taxes to the companies concerned, in order that they in turn can pass it on to the consuming public in reduced electric, gas, or other utility service rates. What a hope! : In this federal tax remission proposal some $9 million is involved. In B.C. the two main private corporations which stand to gain most from Gordon’s “gift” are the Westcoast Transmission and Inland Gas (McMahon), ° which sells natural gas to Hydro, and the B.C. Telephone Company, all of which have piled up astronomical pro- fits, and neither noted for any benevolent cut-backs in con- sumer rates. Minister Gordon says his proposals are made on the ‘ex- pectation’ — but not the ‘condition’ that his tax refund to the provinces will seep down to the consuming public. ~ The consumer says it must be a “condition” otherwise it will simply be pocketed by these monopolies to swell | their already swollen profits—goughed from the public in exorbitant service rates. A ‘crucial decision’ orld opinion for an end to U.S. aggression in Vietnam. W. ‘continues to grow. U.S. operational forces in South Vietnam, now estimated at over 70,000, on the ground and in the air, are suffering crushing defeats — the full extent of which are well concealed by a tight U.S. military cen- sorship. Driven desperate by these developments, President Johnson is expected to make what is described as “a cru- cial decision” in the next few days. That this “crucial de- cision” will herald another drastic escalation of the Penta- gon’s dirty war in Vietnam is already indicated by an in- pa ee U.S. military service draft for additional cannon: odder. With their native puppet-government troops deserting en masse and an already powerful U.S. army spreading death and destruction but gaining no victories, the Penta-. gon warhawks in their desperation plan a further escala- tion of their suicidal aggression in Southeast Asia. Hence the heralded LBJ “crucial decision”. Another grim re- minder that the struggle for peace must also be escalated. Tom McEWEN recent U.S. White Paper, purporting to “prove” that North Vietnam‘aims to take over South Vietnam by force of arms, provides a lot of data to prove the contrary, That of course is a common peculiarity of so- called governmental white papers which have as their prime aim the covering up of political intrigue, mass murder or naked ag- gression, During past months there has been a vast propaganda turned out by the Pentagon, seeking to create the illusion that the South Vietnam Liberation forces (Viet-Cong) have been armed to the teeth by “outside” forces, and particu- larly from North Vietnam, China and other Socialist countries, Appendix D of this special U.S, white paper lists this arms build- up in South Vietnam’s Liberation forces in some detail. Covering an 18 months period from June 1962 to January 1964, this list of arms and supplies to the Viet . Cong make a grand total of 179 items, roughly about 23 percent of the 7,500 weapons and sup- plies “captured” by the U.S, and its puppet forces during the same period, Obviously 179 out of 7,500 puts Appendix D and its Pentagon Goebbels brigade well ahead in the international Liars Club, and the South Vietnam Liberation forces providing the bulk of their own defense material against U.S, aggression. Appendix C aims to give “case histories” of North Vietnamese “infiltrating” into South Vietnam, and produces the grand total of six North Vietnamese “infiltra-~ tors” not born in South Vietnam, Brings to mind the massive ED SIMS PT reprints are available Reprints of page. eight of last week’s issue of the PT which accused the U.S, of being guilty of genocide in Vietnam. are available free at the PT office, The full page of pictures showing atrocities by U.S, and puppet forces was prepared by the PT as a contribution tothe fight to stop U.S, aggressionin Vietnam, LABOR ROUNDUP: Grain companies: provoke port crisis, says Sims Following a series of unpro- ductive meetings between union and management representatives in the current grainhandlers strike in Vancouver terminal ele- vators, Dr. G, Neil Perry, feder- al mediator, announced a “last ditch” effort scheduled for Tues- day and Wednesday of this week to reach a settlement of the dispute. Involved are the Alberta Wheat Pool terminal and the In- ternational Union _of Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink and Distillery Workers, The Alberta Wheat Pool ter- minal, struck since June 2, has been attempting to move grain deliveries through the United Grain Growers, Saskatchewan Pool and Pacific Terminal ele- vators, This Alberta Pool grain, re-directed to other company terminals, has been declared “hot” bythe grainhandlers’ union; resulting in extensive layoffs al these terminals, U.S. Worker “THE VIETNAM WAR WILL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER” —LBJ. 50,000 U.S, Marines invasion of the Dominican Republic because forsooth, the Pentagon warhawks had “discovered” 56 communists in Santo Domingo, This particular White Paper as with others of its kind, is designed to bolster up the “moral” and “legal” justification for U.S, aggression and savagery in Vietnam. Its main argument, of course, is that it intervened at the “invitation” of the “legally established government” of South Vietnam; that is “legally estab- lished” by Washington, But since there has now been no less than nine similarly “le- gally established” U.S, puppet “governments” in Saigon, eight of them during the past 18 months, the White Paper proves nothing beyond the brutal fact of U.S, intrigue, savagery and ag- gression in Vietnam, Outside the immediate realm of this so-called White Paper, an- other eventuality is rapidly de- - veloping in South Vietnam, No longer possible to hide, it was briefly reported in the back pages of the monopoly press a few days ago, It is that scores of hundreds ot conscripts are deserting the puppet armies of South Vietnam; of hundreds of such conscripts being rounded up like cattle and herded into U.S, supervisedarmy camps for “training” seek every “avenue of escape, many losing their lives in the process but pre- ferring that to “dying for Amer- ican imperialism” in their own country, against their own people.
