Gest ashes ta Lee Festival du Goes Pensionnes de Maillardville, Br. 86 Did you know that the first settlers who ar- rived in Maillardville from all over Canada brought with them some very interesting customs which are today an integral part of Le Festival Du Bois? Tradition had it that during the winter, the men would leave their homes for months on end for vastly forested regions. There they would labor through the long cold months to provide for the families they had left behind. When the month of March arrived, the tired loggers would rejoice knowing that they would once again be reunited with their loved ones for “le temps des sucres,” which in essence was a time for celebration and enjoying maple syrup. In 1909 when these pioneers arrived in Mail- lardville, there were no maple trees from which came the sweet sap used to make maple syrup. Thus, the pioneers needed to improvise on the traditions that Spring brought with it. Triathlon reminds participants of the hard work of the community s pioneers They decided instead to commemorate the end of their labor with a village-wide celebration. To day at le Festival du Bois, the Triathlon serves to remind us of how hard the pioneers worked to make our community what it is now. By participating in the Triathlon, you too can relive a part of history. The Triathlon, will take place on March the 8th, at 9:00 a.m. and will be- gin at Como Lake. This event is approximately a half-hour long and open to all groups of people from ages 12 and up. All teams must be com- posed of 5 members, 2 canoeists, 1 runner and 2 people to finish off the race by sawing a massive log in as little time as possible. You can register in advance by calling 936- 0039. Registration cost is $30.00 per team and the winners and runners-up will receive cash prizes and other souvenirs from Le Festival. The deadline for registration is the 1st of March, and remember that places are limited.
