Pumper crews were split and shifted to other apparatus. Units responded to alarms with just the driver. This "carry over" from the volunteer days gave the false impression of protection. It makes little sense having equipment at an emergency scene without adequate manpower to operate it. MANNING APPARATUS - Today's Fire Departments utilize 3 basic pieces of apparatus: i) The Pumper - This unit supplies water under pressure, through hoses to the fire. Normally it carries 5 men. Modern practice uses 4 men per pump but responds more equipment per fire, eg. 2 Pumpers, 1 Truck and a Rescue Unit. 2) The Ladder Truck or Platform Aerial ~ This unit is manned with 3 or 4 men depending on its service area. 3) Rescue Unit - This apparatus carries the Jaws of Life, extra S.C.B.A. (masks), spare air & oxygen cylinders. It's manned by 2 or 3 men, it answers all medical emergencies on its own. It responds to all fires and M.V.A.'sS in support of a Pump Company. FIRE SUPPRESSION ~ They are the backbone of the Fire Service. They man the fire fighting units and attend to all emergency calls. They are responsible for apparatus and hall maintenance. They do business maintenance inspections and minor by-law enforcement, under the guidance of the Fire Prevention Department. ‘ FIRE PREVENTION - The responsibilities of the Department results in time and effort applied to many programs: A) Fire Inspections 1) regular inspections in all commercial Port Coquitlam buildings. 2) development and management of a company inspection program.
