Watt returns as AHL Coach

Tom Watt didn't seem in his
best humor when he answered
the phone at the team hotel. His
squad had lost six consecutive
games and, quite apparently, he
doesn't like losing any more than
he did 30 years ago. But he
warmed to the conversation when
it. turned from his team’s current
plight to his return to the
professian he's known all his
working life.

Waitt, the professional coach, is
back behind a bench, at the helm
of the St. John's Maple Leafs in
the AHL. He spent a year as
player
development, evaluating
everyone under contract, and
another as director of pro
scouting, compiling a book on the
other 25 NHL organizations. And
while he was always in a rink —
he watched 176 games last
winter — clearly something was
missing.

“It wasn't pleasant,” he was
quick to point out. “But I'm a
coach, that’s what 1 do. It was like
being a movie critic evaluating a
performance. | had no real
involvement in the contest.”

Little wonder he missed the
action, Watt has been coaching
since 1959 when, as a physical
educator, he foaked after high
school teams at Jarvis Collegiate
